I drive 2000 grand marques with 56,234 miles. I notice 2001 and new GM call for 5w-20. I’m currently using 5w-20 M1 as far as I can tell the 2000 and newer GM have the same engine. Do you think my using 5w-20 is a mistake; could I cause damage to the engine? I don’t notice any increase in fuel economy with the 5w-20.

Just want some opinions thanks

Not a mistake at all, 5w20 was back-spec'd for 92 and up Crown Victoria's and Grand Marquis, in addition to a large number of other Ford vehicles.

Here are the Ford motor oil recommendations for various Ford-Lincoln-Mercury vehicles - Grand Marquis 4.6L's are back spec'd 5W-20 to 1992.

The 2001+ engines are *slightly* different from yours, but only by the addition of PI "Performance Improved" heads. They add about 15 horsepower if I remember correctly.

Otherwise, the 4.6L is identical from 2000 to 2001 and up.

I drive a 2000 Crown Vic and have owned/driven countless Crown Vics over the years, so I'm very familiar with these cars.

I almost exclusively run TropArtic 5W30 synthetic blend in them, although I once ran Pennzoil Platinum 5W20 in my old 1995 Crown Vic just to try it out. I never really noticed any difference from one to the next - certainly not a mileage difference.

Both viscosities are acceptable, and you won't be doing any harm with either of them. My 1995 Grand Marquis has only seen 30 weight oils, whether it's 10w-30, 5w-30, or 0w-30. I plan to try the Amsoil XL 5w-20 after my Series 3000 5w-30 interval.

I was a little confused by "GM" also,, but everything else sounded right. Using Motorcraft 5W20 and MC filters on wife's 01 "Gran Mommie". 5K service intervals. No problems, NEVER low of oil with 70K+ miles.

Don't sweat it.
This engine will be just FINE with 0W20, 5W20, 0W30, or 5W30. In Southern summers, 10W30 will work just fine too.
I saw a Crown Vic taxi with 303K on it and the original engine. You know those guys don't use premium oils! Don't sweat it.
