My cars are under warranty so I do not want to extend the oci

I like to keep the engines clean and I do a lot of short stop and go driving. For this reason I've favored synthetics. However, for the added cost of synthetics (PP for example) I could get a dino or semi synth (MC semi for example) AND an air filter.

Which would protect the engine better
1) PP + oil filter @ 5k oci
2) MC + oil filter + air filter @ 5k oci

Thanks

I would go with option number 2.

Personally, I go with a Group IV synthetic, and change my air filter every 3,000 miles. I change engine oil every 10-12,000 miles though.

No, its pretty clean around here. Can be lots of pollen - that's about it though

5k for an air filter is very short even if you live in a dust bowl....most of the manufacturers recommend 15-30k miles for an air filter change. It is certainly not harming anything to change the air filter that frequently but given the choice in your OP regarding PP for MC both for a 5k OCI, definitely go for the PP.

As stated 5k miles is nothing for an air filter, and in fact both oils will also go 5k miles with ease. B/c of that, I'd say go with MC semi-syn and save yourself a few bucks...oh and save a few more bucks by not replacing you air filter every time (unless you have reason to believe it needs to be changed that early)

Number 2 WITHOUT the air filter.

NOT needed no matter where you live. I live in VERY dusty (have dirt in the bottom of my air cleaner housing) and change out my air filters 30-40k miles.

Don't WASTE the $$. Really!

Take care, Bill

There isn't really a reason to run syn oil for 5,000 mile oil changes unless it is for a year type of use. .The airfilter at 5,000 miles is too often and may increase wear.
