I went to get my oil changed after draining mine they told me they were all out of 0w-20. They said they had some 0w-20 508/509 VW spec that would be okay. I have a 25 Lexus NX350 that calls for Castro 0w-20 I realize "Castrol" isn't necessary and most 0w-20 SAE full sythetic would be safe. My question is is the Euro/VW oil safe my vehicle or should I drain and replace?

508/509 0W-20 are impressive on paper because they're dyed green and carry an Euro approval. Most people tend to forget that an OEM approval for a lubricant is also tied to how an engine is engineered, built, the materials is made of, etc. The 508/509 oils are very thin - blended for fuel economy oils. Toyota has their own version of such an oil called TGMO 0W-20 and it's loaded with Moly so that the engine easily survives the frequent trips to the boundary lubrication regime. Guess what? VW 508/509 oil are not loaded with Moly.

To make a long story short, I would have chose the best 5W-30 they had and went about my day. It's summer now, so an ILSAC 5W-30 is a perfectly suitable replacement for 0W-20 in warm weather.

New tgmo doesn't have much moly IIRC as it's made by mobil and mobil is using infineum's moly a lot and the ppm count doesn't matter as much. There's different moly types that need different treat rates.

Tgmo wasn't anything special even when it had a high moly ppm count. Had a high vii compared to other 0w-20's but I think that went down too. Mazdas high moly 0w-20 is preferable to tgmo but it's not worth buying since 5 quarts is over 40 bucks. M1 ESP 0w-20 and other euro rated 20 oils and likely pup as well will likely outperform high moly tgmo and mazda oil in wear control and other aspects. For those that like moly they can get valvoline extended protection too.

Large amounts of Organo Moly - MoDTC - serves other purposes that Trinuclear Moly does not - like friction reduction during boundary lubrication regimes, it is an anti-oxidant, it can quench LSPI in downsized T-GDI engines, and it prevents ZDDP decomposition over time.

I think the LSPI quencher that LubeGard markets is high moly with no Ca or zinc … I put it in SN M1 ESP for our Lexus …
