5.7l hemi oil.....

Because you live in hot Texas the reason you skipped over trying the 5w30 first?
The jump you made was huge...... cst roughly 8.5 to cst roughly 14.5. I would have started around 11.5 Is your 5w40 SP?

It is SP rated but if it wasn't I wouldn't mind since my engine's not lspi prone nor burning the thicker oil. Wasn't so much the heat because if peak summer temps were 20f lower where i lived i'd've still used a 3.5+ hths oil anyway knowing thickie me. I only lost about 0.2 maybe 0.3 mpg tank average compared to the same season with 0w-20. Seems very worthwhile to me. I used to use 10w40 and 20w-50 instead of 5w-20 in both my old fords just for the heck of it even though they didn't burn oil.

Same, I went from 0w-20 to 5w-40 in my 2021 by the 14k mark. That junk made the engine burn oil and loud at hot idle. Doesn't burn a drop and it's dead silent to where I only hear the gdi pump now. Also hated how it'd splash like actual water when draining the sump making a mess of things.
When did Hemis get direct injection?

I momentarily forgot this thread was about hemi's and started talking about my GM truck. But many 5.7 owners run a 40 grade with no issues too and if I owned one it'd also get anything ≤3.5 hths. It was only some early mds variant that was known for throwing a code about oil viscosity but that's a non issue now.

I'm guessing he's talking about when some early MDS equipped run of the 5.7 would throw a code about oil viscosity and have a check engine light on for it.
No codes with HDEO

2013 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7… For its first 80k it had PP or PUP 5w-20/whatever the dealership dumped in. It was my dad’s truck and he stopped DIYing oil changes when his health was declining. Upon receiving the truck, I used PP 5w-30, then M1 5w-30, then M1 0w-40. Engine has always been quiet, no MDS codes. It has 102K now and I do 5K OCIs. I’m near Austin, TX.
