What if the car manufacturers start to specify 5-10 oil because it will help get better fuel economy that has been mandated by the EPA? The car companies say they have tightened up the clearances in the engines and the oil companies have "beefed up" the 5-10 oil and they both say everything is fine for your engine and it will not cause any problems or decrease engine life.

Would you use 5-10?

Is this the next step?

I would try xW10 in my '00 MB E430 even the recommended is Mobil 1 0W40 and it is running with Mobil 1 0W20 now. My particular E430 is running much quieter with thinner oil.

Yes.

I doubt it, but who knows.

A 10 would be an extremely thin oil. The range for a 20 is 5.6-9.3 cSt at 100C, so a 10W would have to be even lower than that.

A straight 10W would probably be thin enough at 40C to be called a 0W-10.
