4T60 vs 4T60-E gasket and filter

Have a GM 4T60 transmission/transaxle. Accidentally bought a 4T60-E gasket and filter to service it.

Gasket looks directly interchangeable, but anyone know what's different about the filters?

How important is changing the filter anyways on these transmissions? Factory filter, transmission has 160k on it or so, but had a total fluid replacement "flush" at 45k. Pan has never been off. No issues to report, fluid "looks" good. So probably just do a pan drop and refill, cleaning up the magnet.

Go to a GM parts website and look up your parts by vin, see if the part number you look up matches the part you have.

My '06 GTO has a deeper pan, so the filter neck, ect may be different.

The original gaskets are reusable, just clean it with brake fluid. It will be better than the aftermarket. Definately change the filter. I wouldn't do a pan drop if I didn't have the correct filter. I had a 4T60E and I am not sure the two use the same filter. You can confirm this by going to rock auto's web site and compare the two and see if they use the same part numbers. It just pushes on and make sure you get the old filter o ring removed with the old filter. If you use the wrong filter, you might not be able to get the pan back on properly since this filter is practically resting on the pan's bottom.You may also want to search on the net because I remember a TSB on replacing the existing magnet and replacing it with a larger one.

I had a 91 cutlass ciera with the 4T60 and the filter was so clogged it couldn't make pressure and started slipping, shedding clutch material in a positive feedback loop.

I changed the modulator, filter, and fluid, and it came back to life.

It is absolutely important you do this. I would also consider switching to a "red stripe" adjustable modulator, you can firm up the shifts a lot from stock and they'd still be acceptable.

Get an aftermarket pan with a drain plug, so future ATF changes will be easy
