Hey guys,

Co-worker has a '72 Camaro with a 496 BBC roller with a Muncie Has all sorts of hot rod parts. Anyway, he finished it last year and ran 20w50 VR1, now he wants to go Rotella 15w40 but wasn't sure if he should use T4, T5, or T6. It's obviously not a dailly and changes the oil for each summer.

Definitely not Rotella. If he's got that much coin into an engine, why not use one of the @High Performance Lubricants racing oils?

They have it in a 5W-40:

On our 8.1 GM gassers at Allison we ran Mobil 1 15W50. Never had oil related issues. Broke plenty of parts but mostly valve train due to lots of high rpm cycling.

Mobil 1. I would asl the engine builder...
It's a roller cam; you there's no need for higher levels of ZDDP. And Rotella ain't what it used to be, anyways. Far better choices out there.

Any full syn 15w-40 not t6 would be good. He could use delo xsp, delvac extreme, or valvoline hd fs but m1 15w-50 is a great oil so I think he should run that instead of vr1 and rotella.

Rotella? Mostly blended for a diesel? Max rpm on the diesel is likely to be 3,500 rpm. No need for anti foaming agents. Somebody is getting bad advice. What essentially is a race engine should use a high performance blended oil that not only doesn’t foam but maintains stability in a fuel rich-blowby environment. Plenty to choose from. Sure they’re not as cheap as Rotella.

That is a serious motor! Ooof!
I’d run a racing 20W-50…big fuel dilution on something that big, and if it’s being raced adds to the stress.
I bet that pulls the front tires off the ground on a hard launch!

I like Rotella just fine, I've used it plenty in relatively low rev diesels and will use it again when it makes sense............... and Rotella has no business being in that engine. Stick with the VR1. Or 0w40 Euro.

Why even switch?
