Hey all,
Been away in the deserts of Iraq for a while, but am getting ready to come home. I have an 04 Mach 1 and was wondering what oil would be best for my engine. I know some will say to go with Motorcraft, but she will see redline more than most and I wanted something to protect a little better than the factory oil. BTW, redline is 6800 rpms, and it will see stop and go quite a bit as well. Thanks!

Welcome back! (soon)

GC 0w30 Nice and stable 30wt oil... might even be too heavy!

M1 5w-20 might be a good warranty maintaining oil to use, and, honestly, most 5w-20 oils are extremely shear stable - its not like youll be doing extended OCIs if youre driving it that hard.

Ever think of conservation of fuel, rather than lots of redline? Itll make the car last a lot longer and keep $$$ in your pockets instead of the saudis...

Id run LC in there to keep whatever oil you choose doing its best, especially under hard acceleration and whatnot.

JMH

Thanks, it wont be seeing redline daily but at least once or twice a week I like to let it wind up and run it hard. Besides, thats what she was made for! Is the Mobil 1 shear stable? Ive read on here several times that it likes to shear down.

I believe you're thinking of the M1 5w30. It seems that most, if not all, 5w-20's (including M1) are very shear stable.

Jason get home safe.

I'm torn between the thinner vs heavier arguement. I feel that 5W-20 is fine in most passenger vehicles that spec that weight. I've been doing the maintenance on my Mother's 500 and have been using Exxon 5W-20 w no worries. My buddy's 03 Mach recently required a motor rebuild due to bad piston ring wear. Some of the cylinders were at 40% leakdown. He had been using Motorcraft 5W-20 w very modest OCI's. Ford stepped up and warrantied his 4.6L but do you think he's gonna keep using a 5W-20 oil??

We take our cars to the track regularly and run them hard. I use 5W-40 M1 in my 420rwhp LS1 with no problems. UOA's of 40W have been excellent to say the least for the way I use the motor. IMO in a heavy loaded performance engine a 5W-20 will not cut it for max engine life! My Mother's 3.0 Ford 500 is a different story.

Jason I would run nothing less than a thick 30W and do a couple UOA's from there on.

Our thoughts and blessing are with you everyday!

What do you think about Redline 5W20? After some research it seems that is the thickest one out there, plus its made for that kind of application anyway right?

Ryan,
Did your friend need to show proof or copies of oil change reciepts to get FORD to rebuild his engine ?? I really don't feel good using 5w20 in a V-8.

Jason,
Welcome back home.

If I had a Mustang I would use a 30 Wt oil.

In my '03 Mach 1 I have been using a blend of Mobil 1 10w30(5 qts.) and 15W-50 (1.5 qts). It ends up being a boosted 30 weight, and I am happy with that.

I personally wouldn't use a 20Wt in anything that saw high rpms, especially sustained high rpms. I'd use Mobil 1 5W40 or some other quality synthetic 5W40.

LT4 Vette, As far as receipts I am not sure but he did keep a log of the changes, dates, oil and filter used etc that was required by the service writer before they would process the claim.

Jakebrake, sounds like your on the right track with that mix.

Jason8691, Redline seems to make great oils and their 5W-20 is probably no exception. If your plan on using it I would perform a UOA after a few OCI's to determine how it is protecting the motor. HTH
