??ARMY Guy, no Im not being sarcastic. I think thats a great use of Mobil products in a Jeep, and I hope someday to have the means($Money$) again to do the same for my Jeep. Um...Jeep Wave?...

84ZMyFavorite: Hooah, thanks man.
Mr.RPM: Whoa; that's one heck of a run through. Nice picture. Let me know how that oil pan looks.

haha, well this is true. Its a jeep thing though =P
everyone says its a strong engine, well Im gonna test it. haha

but those are my extremes, i may only do that twice a year.
The 4.0 Jeep engine is a strong engine, but ragging it at high rpms isn't going to help it live a long life. It's a long stroke, inline engine....they don't like high rpms. Think of your 4.0 as a gasoline powered diesel engine. lol

Ive had a handfull of these 4.0s in my time, two of which I still have now, one of which is my 99 with its Freshly Built 4.0 that Im driving today, the other being my Beloved 2001 SilverStone Metallic Jeep Cherokee with its 64,606 mile 4.0. Neither of these Good, Tight engines "Mind" thicker oil(Custom Break-In Oil for the 99 was somewhere in the low Straight 30s), and I have put 15w-40 Diesel oil in my 01, with Good results actually. My 01 has Quaker State 10w-40 in it right now. I do believe that High Mileage, Severe useage 4.0s DO like heavier weight oils like Straight 30s, Diesel 15w-40s, and even 20w-50 weight oils to "Fill" in the gaps between Worn moving parts. Those Newer, Tight tolerance engines discussed before might make noise with thicker oils because they are not getting suffecient oil to their Tight Tolerance moving parts. Thats my humble opinion, Im only right about half the time anyways. I use 10w-30 or 10w-40 in Good Jeeps with 4.0s, and Straight 30 usually in Worn Jeeps.
Tight tolerance 4.0? When did Jeep build them? There's nothing tight clearance/tolerance about a factory Jeep 4.0. Even when brand new off the dealer lots, the 4.0 made plenty of noise....the infamous 4.0 piston slap. UOAs show the 4.0 prefers a thicker 40wt oil vs your typical 30wt...that right there tells you that this is not a tight tolerance engine. Either way, the 4.0 is about as old school of a "modern engine" that you will find up to its death in 06. I love the simplicity of it and in general, the Jeep 4.0 (have owned 3 now) is one of my favorite engines and I will never buy a Jeep that doesn't have one. *****!

It is a strong engine, but it DOES NOT like sustained high RPM. And there's pretty much no point, its torque is all done by ~4000 RPM anyway and beyond that you're just flogging for no gain. As came up in another thread, the 4.0 is a gasoline engine that performs much more like a diesel. Its all about torque.
I agree 100%.

I have 3 of these now, all either being restored or complete. Great projects.
The 4.0 is a loud engine. It's adds to their character.

Over the years I have bought (brand new) 3 Jeep Wranglers with 4.0s...all 3 had piston slap from day one. I currently still own one of them, the 97, and it is the quietest of the 3. The 98's piston slap was really pronounced whether the engine was hot or cold-this engine was loud. The 95 and 97 were quieter, but still, the slap was pronounced, especially when parked running in a garage or in between two other vehicles. If you have a 4.0 that doesn't slap, I'd love to see a video of it running. lol

its a dam good filter, but u can FL1A motocraft craft from walmart for $3.75, its bigger filter u can run on 4.0L, and alot 4.0 owner using it.
Depends on what year 4.0. The 99 and up 4.0s have a horizontal mount filter. These can use the larger filters without clearance isues. The 98s and older mount the filter on a angle that points it towards the upper control arm, at least on a TJ. I tried using a FL1A on my 97 years ago and it put the end of the filter way to close to the UCA for me.

That is where mine is with 121K miles and 40wt oil.

Wow, pavelow! Lots of early morning intrest, huh? My 2001 Cherokees 4.0 dosent have any piston slap noise. It is a very smooth, quiet running engine. It does have only 64,620 miles on its original everything, but now that I think about it, I have owned 13 Cherokees, 9 of which have had the 4.0, and only one of them, my 99, which I still have had piston slap due to #2 cylinder wrist pin egging out #2 piston with stuck rings and severely worn piston skirt. Now All is good with 6 new Sealed Power standard size pistons and Hasting Cast rings in Freshly honed cylinders that were not far from facroty spec despite 139,??? miles with last 7,??? miles running with that messed up #2 piston. Yes, there are Tight 4.0s, that I would consider to be well, smooth, quiet running with good hot oil pressure, usually with low miles, but not always low mileage, as my 87 has 293,188 miles on its original motor that was very well taken care of with plain Valvoline, Castrol, Pennzoil, QuakerState oils and Fram/Napa filters that sounds and performs like it has 93,188 miles.

wow this thread is still going, what i have learned since becoming a BITOGer lol.

I like to think my jeep (now at 78k miles) is pretty quiet.
no louder then any other engine really.

it defiantly sounds like a tractor/diesel/UPS truck (lol) but not very loudly. you need to be in front of the jeep by the hood to hear it.

as for me revving out the jeep, your all probably right about over revving it. but don't forget to rev it every now and then. babying an engine all the time isn't good either. give it a good spirited run every now and then to get carbon deposits moving.

Mine is a "newer" 4.0 being a 2004 model...and it doesn't seem to particularly care for heavier oils either. Give it a good 30 weight and it's real happy.

I've had two 4.0's, while they have a distinctive sound to them I've grown to love I didn't/don't find them especially noisy. None of mine had piston slap, lifter tick can often be eliminated with higher ZDDP oils and MMO.

They do sound like a tractor LOL that's why I love 'em.
