3K OCI Enlightenment

I have a 2002 sonoma with 96k miles on it, using dino maxlife. Normally i drive 80/20 highway/city, but now its nearly all city since Im not driving to school for the summer. I have been doing 3k OCI for nearly 10 years and wanted to bump it up some. However, doing all this short trip city driving I feel the need to do my next oil change at 3k.

Does it say 3K oci in your owners manual?

schwartr88
3k for severe
7.5k for normal.

So 5K would be a happy medium?

Would it really ? Are you sure ? Based on what ?

My owner's manual for the 2.7L V6 gives the same schedule as Schwartr's does for his engine. My engine chewed up synthetic and spit it out in a mere 4000 miles of easy driving. If I followed your advice with 5000 mi on dino, I have a feeling it could end up quite unhappy. Maybe the same for Schwartr88 too.

This is exactly the sort of unqualified and potentially bad "advice" that I was trying to alert our new poster 'Bender' to.

UOA with proper interpretation is the only sound method for safely extending OCI.

Before BITOG I was a 3K OCI dino user in a car that recommended 5K OCI's. I saw the light and now I do 5K mile Mobil One OCI's. I know I can go longer but old habits are hard to die.

Sprint,

It's the Chrysler 2.7 L V6. Has a reputation for sludge related failures - the overall percentage is small but it is still noteworthy. Engine has 3 timing chains and apparently the oil is exposed to very high skin temperatures on the heads.

5000 miles should not be a problem assuming you are putting those miles on within a few months. Factors including multiple short trips, racing, very cold climate, lots of idle-time in traffic, etc may be reasons to reconsider your OCI.

For regular driving though, 5k shouldn't be a problem. Having said that, my car has never gone 5000 miles on the same oil. I do a lot of 1 to 2 mile trips every week, and that's just plain hard on any oil. I also do a 100 mile round-trip once a week so i hope that helps to counter the damage from all the short-trips.

I just changed my oil and used Motorcraft semi-synthetic (sm-GF4) 5w30 and i'm going to *try* to let it go 4000 miles during the hot Texas summer and do a UOA and see how it looks. After your 5K run you may want to do a UAO just for fun and see where your engine stands.

Good luck

Is this engine used in the Chrysler Predator?

It (the 2.7 L V6) is used in the Chrysler Intrepid (Dodge Intrepid in the US), the Concorde, the Chrysler 300, some of the mini-vans and I believe either the Stratus or Sebring. There are approximately 800,000 to 1 million of these engines out there.

The Predator - I don't know for sure but I don't think so.

Had the 2.7L in a 2003 Dodge Stratus ES, very peppy little engine. I think the sludge problem was supposedly "solved" after the 2002 model year, at least that's the *official* mantra.

Thanks all for the great feedback! The car is driven all easy miles. I will have a look in the owners manual and see what is the suggested OCI. I drove about 1500 freeway miles over the holiday weekend so I'll be changing it this week. It didn't drink any the whole OCI and not completely black on the stick. I am going to try my free Valvoline Max Life 5W30 conventional for the next OCI.

Good choice, its a great oil.

5000 Mile OCI "Ohh be still my heart"
Yes toocrazy old habits are hard to break.
I spoke with the service manager at the Nissan
dealer and the guy showed me the service records
for a 1996 Nissan 200 thjat comes in the dealer
ship for an oil change once a month. The guy
had over 500,000 miles on the car and was going
to drive it till the wheels fell off. This was
using conventional Pennzoil so I guess there
is something to be said for keeping clean oil
in an engine.
