US agriculture/food processing industry uses 5 times as much energy as the calorific content of the food that gets to the table.

Energy (particularly oil) is the major input.

That's scary.

Not sure that's a good comparison since wheat, as an example, is much less energy dense than oil.

IIRC, I calculated it would cost me $57,000CDN to buy equivalent one GJ of red hard wheat. Equivalent 1GJ gasoline would cost me $40CDN in comparison. Figures for gas energy content found here:

njc, I think that your sums are out.

Petrol is around 45MJ.Kg, while wheat is around 15.

Therefore you'd need around 22Kg petrol ($38Oz), or 67kg wheat ($55Oz in 10kg bags).

Incidentally, power stations are paying less than $2/MJ for coal.

Well like I said before... USA has one of the lowest priced gasoline in the World. If the Netherlands can spend $7.00 on a gallon of fuel and still live a nice life,, then so can the USA.

USA! USA! USA!!

Yep, just have to learn how to conserve a little bit - something we may not be used to. Cut down on the trips to the mall, stop spending that $5 at Starbucks and make your own coffee, etc etc etc...

Can still have a nice life.

Slick17601 - just stop eating and wearing clothes...just look around your house, i would bet 95 to 100% of the stuff around you including what you are wearing was transported by truck...

OH21 - lol....starbucks? the mall? in my dreams brotha

You're right, I was way off. When I initially did the calcs the only info I could find on wheat energy content was calories per pound or per cup so I converted to GJ.

5x the qty energy is a lot ... doesn't sound very efficient.
