was sitting in park today, revving up my car so my buddy can hear the header i just recently installed. revved it quick to 3,000 rpm, and he reached over and turned the key off ( i dont know why, he just laughed)......can this hurt the engine in any way? i sort of freaked out, i always let it idle down good ( i run the car fairly hard) but i always let it idle down before i shut it off. car seems to run fine but could that have hurt it to shut it off at 3,000+ rpm?

will not hurt a thing there are a lot of old timers in their 80's that rev the car and shut it off because they have been doing it since the 50's
i have one living across the street

The PCM would have shut off fuel and the ignition the moment the key was turned off, so basically the engine just pumped a little air around while it spun down.

No damage. As 55 stated fuel and spark was cut when it was keyed off. If anything it may actually have LESS fuel in the cylinders as it basically pumped the residuals out the exhaust

No harm done. It reminds me of a story of me driving a good buddy home in his car because he had one too many drinks. He decided to reach across and toss his Caravan into Reverse while I was driving about 60 mph on the highway. I was able to flip it back into drive quickly and warned him not to do it again or else his Caravan would be parked on the side of the highway and he'd be walking home alone.

You guys have a good point about the fuel injection shutting off the fuel. But are we talking about a fuel injection vehicle?

I guess i was thinking old school carb with headers? mobilaltima?

Did you punch your buddy in the arm for that one? Not that he did any damage.
