I have a newer 2L 4cyl normally aspirated motor with 9500 miles on it.
It has a CVT. The whole package is as new. Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2014 (late)
I am willing to sacrifice it for testing purposes
smile.gif

It sees 80% Hwy and 20% city driving- most times less than 20%

Now for the sake of study I have purchased 4 MicroGreen 101-7 Oil Filters
I am willing to try to run it out to 30K with the option to bail if any UOA dictates I should at every filter change.

So the question is, I have just about every 5w-20 oil here, if not I can grab 5 qts.
I will be using only 5w-20 as Mitsubishi calls for that or 0w-20.

So which motor oil would you use for the test?
I got the filters for half price with a Amazon promo code.
The CUV will get extended Interstate use now as my situation has changed with some 14-16 straight runs...

This should be interesting but I will cringe at 10K intervals.
I will not use any oil additives and will put in a fresh air filter as well from the start and as needed thereafter .

thanks.

Sounds like you will be having some fun!

I would recommend one OCI run with a non Microgreen filter as a baseline/control to measure the Mircogreen's against. Keep the OCI intervals the same and use the same oil. Thus the primary change (variable) from your baseline/control OCI is the Microgreen filters.

Example:
Current OCI (control) - Filter=acb, Oil=xyx, Mileage~7500
Microgreen OCI #1 - filter=Mircogreen, Oil=xyz, Mileage~7500
Microgreen OCI #2 - filter=Mircogreen, Oil=xyz, Mileage~7500

If you're actually trying to get people to lengthen their OCI, I'd just run the oil and filter out to 15k and get a UOA then. Even though the Mitsu will probably make it 30k on one oil run (as long as you keep it topped off) with problems, nobody else would ever do it regardless of your results. 15k should be doable for almost anyone doing mostly highway and keeping the oil level full.

Thanks.
I'm not trying to get people to do anything.
I just read the website a long time ago and thought I'd actually try to see what really happens. I'm pretty thrilled at my own program and this is foreign to me and I believe in trying things myself instead of reading about what others do.
The question was what brand of 5w-20 oil would be good to attempt this with...?

So, do these micro green filters have some sort of magical property to them that renews the add pack in motor oil as it is used up?

Even if a filter were full flow and filtering down to half a micron at 100% the oil is going to "wear out" ......correct? What am I missing here?

Thank you!
I have four filters because it was BOGO free.
The interval is every 10K miles.
This should be interesting.

+1 on this approach

What are you doing to extend the life of the CVT?

If I was going to try 30k I'd try M1 EP, Castrol gold bottle EP or a top tier Amsoil product.

I honestly don't think any of them will do well at 30k even with the microgreen "bypass" filtration. Fun experiment though.

I do use M1 and Ultras in all my cars
This one currently has 5w20 Magnatec and a M101 filter on it at 7K miles now.
I have two of these cars and I have an Ultra on the other.

Oh, it's a bypass filter design. It will filter particles down to 2-5 microns in the bypass filter stage, but there's nothing there to keep the TBN of the oil in the healthy range. Take an oil sample every 7500 miles to check TBN and TAN. I agree with KC Jeep that M1 EP, Castrol Edge gold bottle, or AMSoil Signature Series would be the best 20-weights to try, but I wouldn't bet an engine that they would go 30k miles.

True-agreed
But I do lose oil with each filter change- I'm thinking what a pint or so each time.
That may refresh the oil a bit???
The FCI is 10K not 7500

Yes, a fresh pint of oil will strengthen the TBN, but it's only a pint, and that isn't much if the TBN of the other 3.5-4 quarts is shot. How many quarts does your engine take on an oil change? Of course, if your engine takes an 8-quart oil fill, then there's no problem.

I used to do 2+ year 10,000 mile oci on a short tripped Buick 3800 with 10W30 conventional. The trick was it was an HDEO. Rotella T.

I'm betting the TBN die s long before metals numbers become an issue.

I would love to see what a cheap synthetic like Magnatec 5W20 currently $17.88 per 5 qt at Walmart would do.

If you're dead set on doing it - M1 EP or Pennzoil Ultra is what I'd go with. If you were to pull off a successful 30k run using SuperTech dino, a number of people on this site may experience chest pains, maybe even including me.

Thank you for contributing your time and money to this project. I am sure the filter porn crowd will want to see pictures of the filters dissected after the OCI's.
