Might have temporarily solved oil consumption issue on 2AZFE 2007 Camry

So I have tried everything under the sun to try to rectify this situation other than piston soak. I never have the car for more than a few hours 1-2 times per year. It was wife's car now one of sons. He is away working on his masters.

So what has been tried in the past. Schaeffers 131, BG EPR, Varnasolv, CRC505, HPL Engine Cleaner, Kreen, Valvoline Restore and Protect 2-3X, Valvoline Restore and Protect + HPL Engine Cleaner 2quarts. Everything seemed to help along the way a little bit expect the CRO505.

So not the last oil change but the one before that I had Valvoline Restore and Protect in and I put 1/2 a bottle of Red Line S-1 Injector Cleaner in the crank case. I left it in for 3000 miles and suddenly unannounced the kid came home for help with wedding reception for a friend out of the blue. My wife and I both helped him with the wedding reception planing and other associated issues, I changed the oil and checked the car over and he was off again.

Fast forward and the car has not used any oil that can be discerned on the dipstick. This is a car that was using 8 quarts of synthetic oil between OEM change intervals of 5000 miles or less.

Since I did not know he was coming home I know I did not use Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 because I was mostly purchasing it for his car at the time. I would have used what I have on hand which means it was either Mobil 1 0W40 or it was Mobil 1 Delvac Extreme Full Synthetic 10W30. I think I likely would have put the latter in at the time since I had a ton of it and I got it at a steal. I have been using it in anything I do not think is worth expensive oils since I got a great deal on it.

Since I did not expect him home I did not even have a sample bottle handy.

I originally got the idea to try Red Line S-1 in the crankcase because of Yamaha's Ring Free Product that can be used in fuel and crankcase. Also when a car is burning 8 quarts over an oil change interval what have you got to lose. Obviously I know the design flaw is still present but it is interesting that it not only worked but worked so dramatically.

Should the problem begin to reoccur I will hopefully be able to get the car for a full 24 hours or more so I can pull the plugs and do piston soak on it. I won't pull spark plugs on a hot aluminum cylinder head. Seen it end badly too many times for too many people including dealerships. I know a lot of people do it. I once had it pull the threads out of head in the middle of a third world country. The poor excuse for a Heli-Coil or Time Cert was insidious, archaic and worthy of an infomercial that I had to use to get it back on the road. This was in the early 1990's in Africa. I have never done it since!

How many miles since the last oil change?
Great question and I do not know. This son is working on his Masters and in addition to full time school he was driving for internship, his job, girl friend etc....Now he has two job and school. Before he was putting significant miles on because of the internship but I think both of his jobs are in the city now.

I am lucky to get the car every 9 months or so basicly if the check engine light comes on or maintence required otherwise he stays at University in his apartment. He it is a 2.5 hour drive at 85MPH each way. The kid is still playing sports as well. So every 5000 miles is the soonest I see it.

Tuesday he was home to vote because he has not changed his drivers liscense and I had no idea he was comming home he just showed up! He voted, went for a short run, shaved, showered and hit the road again because he had to school and work still. I barley saw him because I had obligations as well since it was Tuesday and no warning no time to change my schedule. I did check the oil and it was right at the top dot.

and I put 1/2 a bottle of Red Line S-1 Injector Cleaner in the crank case.

you mean the SL-1 .. right ??

Pretty sure that just evaporated. Restore and Protect is starting to work.
Sure the carrier in such a small amount as 1/2 a bottle would burn-off. It is the PEA that you want to stick around long enough to do something. All I can say for sure is that Yamaha makes a fuel additive that is also safe for crank case use called Yamaha Ring Free. Also Gumout used to have a product that listed it as containing PEA and being safe for fuel tank and crank case use. So not an origanal idea from just my mind!

Since I was not able to take a sample I have no idea how safe this is. I am sure it probably bumped up wear metals a tad but I doubt it was a huge bump but I have no facts to support that.

I was going to order Yamaha Ring Free to try. I already had bottles of Red Line SL-1 sitting in my garage though so I figured I would try what I have on hand. Since PEA was designed to clean injectors and intake valves I figured the junk that plugs up the oil scraper rings is likely chemicaly similar.

Not sure if you saw my thread about the same engine in my '07 Scion tC where a B12 Chemtool piston soak over a long weekend has made an impressive difference so far. 1qt/300 miles to maybe ~0.25/qt after 800 miles so far (still unconfirmed about that consumption level, could be less due to non-level driveway). Also continuing to use VRP to mitigate and potentially further improve the issue.
