The World Junior Hockey Championship is in Minneapolis this year. Last year it was in Stockholm, Sweden. The Juniors Is for hockey players under 20 years old, many who will be called up into the NHL in the future.

There are 10 teams. Currently they are about to play their 4th game. Sweden and the USA are currently leading at 3-0 each. Canada has also won 3 games but one was an overtime win.

Fourteen players are the sons of NHL players. It can’t compete with College football or the NFL but is a nice way to watch some young guys play their hearts out. And it’s in your own country this year. Enjoy.

Like was said - not particularly easy to find to watch in the US without the NHL network... And I say that as a MN Wild season ticket holder.

On top of that, the prices to attend were, um, agrressive. They dropped considerably this close in, but the original prices were very high.

Because of the higher level of support, Canada traditionally gets to host it every two or three years. The USA gets to host once every 7 years as with many European countries. The odds of Minneapolis ever hosting the series again are slim. That’s why the organizers tried to get top dollar for the tickets.

By the way, Russia was banned fom the competition, starting in 2022.

I enjoy watching the world junior tournament more than most NHL games
excellent fast paced hockey .
I don't think Canada has enough to win gold unfortunately.

Late breaking news. Sweden beat the USA this evening so has 4 wins for 12 points. Canada beat Finland this evening so has 4 wins but one was a overtime win so it has 11 points instead of 12. The USA stays with 3 wins for 9 points. The USA plays Finland on Friday, the team Canada just beat 7-4. Last year the USA played Finland in the Gold medal game and beat them in overtime. Time for revenge?

So here is what happens on Friday. The winners move into the semi finals and the losers go home. Basically it gives the weaker teams one last chance. :D

Sweden vs Latvia
Czechia vs Switzerland
USA vs Finland
Canada vs Slovakia

Not a fan of watching TV hockey. However catch college level live with some future pros(signed Bruins) daughters CT college.

She is friends with hockey team (roommate dates one) and thinks they are all “old” since they don’t do college play typically till age 21/22

So is this truly because there the best, or favoritism? Interesting.

No way to tell I suppose.

If I were going to watch hockey I would watch this. However if its on now your not just competing with college football but NCAA Bowl games, so that might have a lot to do with the lack of interest. There are what - 30 Bowls now? No chance unless someone hates football.

Thanks for posting though - I did not even know!

The Canadian Junior hockey League is the national league which represent 9 Junior A Leagues representing 118 teams and 2500 players. From the 2500 players, they assemble the national team to play in the World Junior Championship. These guys are the best of the best.

I am quite familiar with the CJHL. So my question stands - which I know you can't answer - but for 14 of what - 20 players to be "sons of NHL players" out of 2500 to truly be the best, sounds sus to me - statistically if nothing else.

I am sure all the Mannings kids will get spots at the best football colleges also.

A clarification. The 14 are from various countries including the USA team. Also the USA has a thriving Junior Hockey organization as well.

The USA plays Finland at 6:00 PM ET today, Jan 2. Canada plays Slovakia at 8:30 PM ET. The losing teams go home. The winners advance to the semi-finals.

The other two games are Sweden vs Latvia at 2:00 PM and Czechia vs Switzerland at 4:30 PM.

A little more detail for anyone interested. There were 10 teams divided into group A and Group B. After the initial round, the two bottom teams, Germany from Group A and Demark from group B were dropped. Neither teams had any wins.

So now, in the quarter finals, Sweden, the top team from Group A played Latvia the new bottom team from Group B, and won. The USA is playing Finland which is a closer match, with 9 points and 7 points respectively. Game is about to start. Canada the top team in Group B will play Slovakia, the bottom team in Group A a little later tonight.
