'22 Subaru Ascent

Sold my 20 Ascent in January with 25k miles on it. I used PP or PUP 5w30, and engine seemed to like it. You will likely have some fuel dilution, so don't fill to the top mark on the dipstick, leave a bit extra in case this happens. I also used a Fumoto valve, and changes are super simple. I did the first OC somewhere between 1k-2k, then at 5k, and every 5k after that. It didn't burn any oil with the 5w30, if anything increased a tad with the fuel dilution.
Uh, oh! May I ask why you sold it?

For oil filter, I use whatever. OEM Honeywell, $3.88 Fram from War-Mart, etc. I ran the OEM Honeywell filter the majority of the 190k miles I put on my FXT, despite the internet saying "OMG, the OEM suBArU FilTer SUX and it wiLL @$$plode because it's NO GOOD!".

There's some boosted moly in the factory fill so I'd run it at least to 3,000 miles. I actually ran the FF to 5k mile in my OB XT.
My recollection is that it's been a long, long time since Honeywell made oil filters. Can someone substantiate that, or tell me I'm mistaken?

Rank acquired UCI for $980 million from private equity firm Carlyle Group LP CG.O in 2011, and FRAM Group, the former automotive consumer products business of Honeywell International Inc HON.N, for $950 million the same year.

I'm in the opposite camp. I changed mine before 2k and recommend you do as well; with oil filter change. Get those wear metals outa there.
Nah, I’m good. My experiences suggest it’s unnecessary. I did early dumps on personal vehicles for many years while simultaneously not doing it on company vehicles. Didn’t make a lick of difference. So I stopped doing it. If it doesn’t manifest to a tangible financial or longevity gain then I’m not doing it… My personal experiences says it does neither.

What is your oil filter doing? :)
I change at 2-3K now because wear-in through the first OCI shears and stresses the oil likely more than at any other time, Also due to tight clearances, the EP is getting used up faster than on a well worn engine.

Then you have D.I. destroying the oil on some engines at wear in - like my Ford.

I'm not breaking your chops....BUT as far as I am aware there is no evidence to suggest either of us is more or less correct than the other. That there is the frustrating part of the question. Here we are in 2022 and a basic question remains a mystery.

Something tells me either your direction or mine is largely irrelevant as chances are high we both have excellent maintenance regimes. So of course, we both have results that seem to bolster our respective positions.

I think the answer is to each is his own. I’m not one of those “what a waste” guys who cries foul at early dumps… Do what you do.

I have always dumped factory fill at 3K, then went right to whatever my OCI will be (Usually 5K, but I'm going to follow the severe interval in the 2019 Tucson at 3,750.....probably do 4K just because easy to remember.)

I have a 2020 Ascent - changed the oil around 1500 miles first time and used dealer oil until 30K miles. I found my local dealer to be a bunch of idiots so I went to an indy and trying Amsoil 0w20 atm. Engine sounds quieter and smoother.

Yeah I did the same thing with my 2021 Kia soul LX 2.0. With H-K vehicles just firing the thing off constitutes severe duty use!

With how inferior the Fram Ultras have become compared to their previous iteration under First Brands, they should have kept the “Rank” name… it’s more fitting.

I think that's debatable. The construction qualities have arguably been downgraded, but that doesn't mean they are unable to provide 20K of service at the advertised filtration level.

I was completely referencing construction. I obviously don’t have the testing capabilities nor am currently challenging that they’re still good for 20k miles… just that for $12+ I think a filter should look as good when it comes out as when it went in.
