2025 Toyota 2.5L Engine Oil Viscosity Update.

I have been going crazy trying to make a good choice of a 0w-16 oil for my new Toyota without using that world's greatest pyramid scheme $15.00 a quart oil. I called my local Toyota Dealer today 6/6/2025 where I purchased my SUV and got Jason, the service manager. I asked him directly if I could switch to a 0w-20 engine oil without Toyota corporate rejecting my warranty. He looked it up and said according to Toyota corporate I can permanently use 0w-20 or 5w-20 engine oil in my 2025 Rav4 SUV with no risk of causing warranty issues. I know it is not that big a difference really, but it makes me feel better, plus it opens up more choices. I thought maybe some people would like to know this.

I ALWAYS put 0w-20 in my Toyota 2.5 Dynamic Force Engine. And I put 0w30 in my Lexus 3.5 engine. And 0w30 in my BMW B48 engine. Those two have 0w20 listed as the primary oil. Certainly doesn't hurt anything...

I get TGMO 0w16 from my dealer for $6-7 a quart. I usually just bring in a 5 qt Valvoline container from another vehicle and they fill it up.

I keep asking this, and no one has ever answered, but has a warranty claim EVER been denied over oil viscosity? It's a non-existent issue. Not to mention, Toyota engines almost never fail (certain truck engines excluded, which had nothing to do with oil)

It’s a record keeping issue. If they ever ask, you’ll be in for a long battle.

try 0w-20 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, the viscosity is close to 0w-16, and the 0w-20 offers a better hths protection or even Valvoline 0w-20 EP. are affordable and commonly found, the Liqui-Moly would be a good choice if wanting 0w-16. or AMSOIL SS for a choice too. what engine are you putting it in and age, miles etc.??

It is a brand new 2025 Toyota Rav4 non-hybrid with their 2.5L engine. I asked my Toyota dealer if I could go to 0w-20 and they recommended not to. They have had to send in customer vehicles engine oil for analysis per Toyota corporate request on warranty issues and...

I worked at a dealer for 12 years, been lurking here since 2005, frequent several other auto related forums. No one has ever produced a warranty denial document for viscosity….now aftermarket extended warranties are a different story.

I don't get it why people here make life so hard.....Toyota (their suppliers, their design process) I trust making their engines robust enough to handle 0w-16 for the warranty period....Stellantis? lol, no. IIRC Toyota 0w16 has lots of moly; surely for a good reason.

O'Reilly has O'Reilly 0W-16 5qts for $28. Walmart has Supertech 0W-16 5qts for $19. Why would you pay $15/qt for 0W-16 from the dealer?
