(my opinion)I have never had an engine failure running the oil specified in the OM. Our 2024 will be using Mobil1 0W-16 (just replaced the factory fill oil at 5k miles). I trust the manufacturer and the engineers that designed the engine. Sent a sample of the oil to Blackstone for analysis.
The manufacturers recommendations are based on Government gas mileage Standards (CAFE). It's not based on what oil grade is best for your engine. I agree that 0/5w20 is a smarter choice.
If the manufacturer was able to tell you to switch to 0w20 at your first oil and remain with 0w20, they would. But by saying you can run 0w20 for only one oil change - then revert back to 0w16, that means they get to keep their CAFE Accreditation, instead of paying millions in fines for failing it, by recommending 0w20 permanently, instead of 0w16.
It's all about the fuel Standard to them. They already know 0w20 would be a wiser choice. But they will never admit it, not without chancing the loss of Accreditation and millions of dollars in fines.
