2023 Toyota RAV4 rental short review

The RAV4 is on the list of vehicles I was considering to replace my wife’s car, but I keep reading about poor acceleration— what does this forum of actual “car people” think?
That will vary by person to person. I think our Grand Caravan is painfully slow, other people have described it as adequate or even “sporty… for a minivan.”

We really like our 2015 LE AWD. We bought it when money was tight for my GF, now wife. 0% financing made it $400/mo with no down. Maintenance has been routine and easy. It’s nice that I can service the oil, filter, ATF, transfer case, rear diff, coolant without a jack.
It’s more sure-footed on snowy roads than my 4Runner, until it gets deep. It’s a nice little car to drive, but being an LE, the radio sucks, the road noise is bad on rough roads and MPGs are poor in town. We’re planning on replacing the RAV4 with a Model Y in the next 5 years, but with electricity and insurance costs rising, we will be considering another RAV4. Hope I can get another one for $24k

My friend has the latest gen Rav and it is quite nice. Big fan of Mazda as an alternative though.

I used one as a rental in Phoenix end of this last winter. Front wheel drive and almost on treadwear indicators I still made it up (and back down) the snowbowl mountain in flagstaff in heavy snow.

I didn’t like the radar cruise…it felt like it waited way too long to slow me down when approaching a slower car and when it did slow me down, it was way too drastic / sudden.

It did great on fuel from Phoenix to flagstaff and back, and Phoenix to Sedona and back again.

I’ve never had a Toyota but there have been some in our family. I can’t get over the fact that they all seem to develop annoying rattles, whether it be interior or suspension rattles, seemingly way too early. Like just out of warranty, but still feels like a new car, early.

Ive had American made new vehicles do that, especially GM. Not Japanese vehicles.

Ive a 2018 Ford edge company vehicle, already had a new motor installed( via crap design), axle bearings popping noise. My local repair place , says vehicles now a days are mostly crap in reliability, so have to be careful with your $900 per month car payment.

Might be the first I've heard of that--usually Toyota/Honda (and used to be Nissan too) were good at initial quality that would then last for years. They have slipped hard of late while domestics have gotten better--but rattles and creaks, not in the warranty period.

Might be related to roads and vehicle type though. I could see a typical passenger car getting loud if treated to what passes as pavement in some areas of the US, while trucks and real SUV's soak it up. Dunno.

I recently rode in a "newish" RAV4 (2021 or 22...). I was surprised by the amount of road noise...particularly from the back (wheel wells?). Other than that it seemed like a smooth enough ride.

I own a 2022 and the acceleration is not poor.Ifvyou look it up compared to Honda, Subaru etc. it's quicker. Those comments must come from the competition posing as owners. There is a LOT of misinformation out there.

My friend bought a hybrid one recently. Not too keen on the exterior styling...a little to bulbous and tacky. Interior was thoughtfully designed though.

I'll be frank. Ever since my ex-GF drove a Recreational Active Vehicle with 4WD in 1995 I always considered them to be "girly" vehicles.
That's until I got a 2024 RAV4 Prime XSE and now appreciate and love them much more than I ever gave them credit for.

This is coming from a guy who's owned a Sequoia, 4Runner, GX, LX, and 2 Highlander Hybrids.

Yeah - they’ve come a long way from their entry as a girl car (literally too small to seat a male), to an appliance looking thing that still said “girl car?”, to the current gen which shares lines with the 4R and has excellent interior dimensions. We’ve had the 24 for about 6 months now. It’s gotten a little noisier on rough roads as the tires harden, and the seat backrest isn’t really right for me personally, but by all means this is a great car. The hybrid drivetrain continues to impress - it is stellar - as a drivers car it is highly precise and willing in traffic. Besides the seat back, the only other detractor for me is interstate road noise - of which there is a lot. I think ours is an xle. Radar cruise is nice. I don’t care for LED headlights but they are hard to avoid now, just because of the color - the optics and beam pattern is top notch in this application.
