Had to rent a U-Haul to get the 19 year old up to college. It’s a 2023 F350 15’ and wow does the 7.3 V8 sound horrible. It’s rough, loud, has a metallic sound to it and it only has 8,100 miles and 220 hours on the engine. Seems to have normal power. Tires look new and I checked the oil and it looks fresh and it is right where it should be on the dip stick. Already has some rust in the engine compartment.

Do all Ford 7.3 sound this way or has this one already been abused in its short 8,100 mile life? I’m guessing too that moving trucks probably get stripped of all sound-insulation to save money?

Sound on video doesn’t do it justice. Easily 2x louder than my 5.7 in the Tundra.

Funny how the diesel is quieter than the 7.3 gas. Who would of ever thought, they won't put the diesel in the Uhauls do to too many people putting gasoline in the trucks.

No, they don't put the diesels in the U-Hauls because of the extra cost and maintenance associated with them.
That would be an absolute nightmare. U-Haul can barely keep a gas motor operational.
Besides, they don't buy the fuel. The customers do.

Drove ford 350 vans for work 30+ years rented 18' from uhaul In November. There so noisy with a rubber mat no carpet and bare metal makes up back of cab. Nothing to soak up any sound. Truck had 51k very clean, good tires and had power to pull a 3k trailer in the hilly Missouri ozarks. Only drove 250 miles.

Rented one a few weeks back for a few hauling needs. Seemed to be in good shape but sure liked hunting for gears in the city. The one thing I noticed was the sticker on the front fender over the steering axle. Advising you to use anti seize on lug nuts and bolts if you change tire. Thought that was interesting.

Sounds like an intake/ exhaust drone. More than likely exhaust, with the custom box on the back. A proper vehicle has properly engineered hangers that balance the exhaust properly but on this, maybe, who cares?

It has a dog house and no sound deadening. All U-hauls are loud. Your Tundra has carpet, sound deadening and you don't ride/drive sitting next to the engine. To me it is odd to compare the two. One is purpose built just to work. The other has to meet a bunch of wickets to include daily driving.

You need to remember that the exhaust manifold is about a foot from your right ankle, with only a piece of plastic with some insulation stuck to it between the two. No other type of vehicle has that issue.

I loved how the Ford V10 in my Coachmen (Ford F53) motorhome sounded on acceleration, especially when I was pulling a vehicle behind it.

Just had in for service a 2022 F250 with the 7.3 gas engine, XLT/Lariat trim and it was not noisy at all. The U Haul as others said, is stripped of sound proofing and other stuff not needed for the work truck. If your Tundra motor was under that U Haul hood it would be just as loud.

That is no lie. I have an 18 year old who got a job at Subase. Full benefits and good pay. I'll let him has college fund when he finds a house.
If you have it in a 529 plan it can roll over into his first IRA and or home purchase! Consult a proper tax professional.

As to the U-haul, maybe they made it loud on purpose so people would stay off the go pedal, and treat the equipment better. It's like how they put uncomfortable seats in humvees so the troops wouldn't be doing cool jumps in them.

My RV had a similar emissions statement but it only had a 22 gallon fuel cell. With a 460 getting 6.7 MPG, that means filling up every 150 miles.

I think jalopnik had a write up about that it's more agricultural sounding. This is the 7.3 Godzilla motor essentially isn't it?
