2022 Tundra Crew Max

I would say Toyota targeted the Ram buyer because it comes off as a "knock off" feature wise.

Does 65k buy a decent equipped F-250 (during normal times)? Assuming one gets the gas engine over the diesel.

Thanks for the detailed review. Much appreciated.

I suspect they will sell at least as well as the old Tundra, but many need larger payload capacity. I thought Toyota might come out with a “Big 10” almost 3/4 ton version for those that need the extra payload. Maybe that will come later.

They did knock off the rear coil springs from the goat truck, but I am sure that improves the ride.

This was a single cab XL but loaded up with goodies...dual batteries and alts..infotainment upgrades 7.3 gasser..10 spd ..bed liner and tailgate step and heavy duty everything $42k last year.
I would buy it again but in a crew cab only. Mpg was actually great.
Tax write off so I flip often.

So, wait for the hybrid model or just move to the 3/4 and 1 ton segment. About what i figured.
I question real world mpg...
Most here used to say they don't care about mpg but I do.
A hybrid would interest me and if it really gets 30 mpg that would be a bonus.
But I would have to do the math.
I don't see Toyota stealing sales with this new Tundra.

I do like the way Toyota does business. My local RAM dealer will list a price $13k off in rebates you don't qualify for. Like $1000 off if your credit is below 650...yeah really.

Fuel economy is huge in the half ton segment. Yeah not everyone buying cares about it but thats the reason you get a half ton. You don't need the capability of an HD and you want the MPG in return.

I think people will be able to flog the hybrid around town and get 20. I don't see it ever getting 30 under any circumstances but if anyone can do it and be trusted long term its Toyota.

I'd be super interested in this 3.5 TT Hybrid in a 4 runner. Maybe in 2050 they will update the 4runner powetrain?

Yeah i have bailed many times on the 4runner... Bad mpg and a bit tight in the drivers seat.. Real reasons...

Add in the oil filter setup too...
Nitpicking but true.

I wrote this yesterday but removed a few tidbits.....

A big improvement over the old Tundra and the looks do not bother me at all. I did not like the center stack but the rest was very modern.

Simply put you get a spartan ride for $50k and a Limited trim is only a mid pack trim...stuff I liked is around $65k plus. Overpriced in my mind.

Here i always get better deals on 250-2500-3500 series trucks.

Yes the new Tundra rides nice and is refined but too expensive and lower tier trims are very spartan and expensive. I was going to have a look see underneath but it was pouring out.

The seats were a bit stiff but that could be because it is new. SR5's
Are pretty basic rides. My favorite red color was a $500 option.

If I was to go for a Tundra I would go for the hybrid as I am used to them and could see this as my sole vehicle. Personally I really am not a 1500-150 type of truck buyer.
To sum it up it will sell great to the intended crowd but it has nothing on the big three at all. Few features that are new with the exception of the rear light tailgate drop feature.

The old Tundra buyer will not be thrilled with the exhaust note.
Great truck just not the best truck.
Basically, there is zero reason for me to sell my Ram and pay $15K to get back into the Toyota family. Got it.

Judging from the early reviews, I think your comments are pretty similar to what others are saying. It is a decent truck, but nothing ground-breaking and it appears that they tried to build a "better Ram."

That about sums it up...
Scotty no doubt will worship it.

If I was buying a 1/2 ton today and I had to choose between the Big 3 and the Tundra, then I would definitely buy a Tundra since I will be paying at/close to MSRP anyway.

But in prior times where the Big 3 were discounting 10k+ and the Tundra was selling at/near sticker, the cost difference is difficult to justify.

When we get out of this mess i can see Toyota giving big incentives or backing off the price.
On a top end Tundra they are getting into the Rivian range.

If trailers are any indication, prices will only go up. Your typical car hauler trailer has gone up 600-1000+ (20-50%) in a year and it has no microchips of any kind. Just basic finished materials.

Big 3 will bring back incentives to a lessor degree and Toyota will stay within 5% of MSRP. MSRP will jump up more dramatically than it has in the past. Getting 10% off a domestic truck will probably be as good as it gets over the next few years. You can get some really pricey half tons like the AT4X for example that make the Tundra price level about par.

Has Toyota proclaimed they can't make a fuel efficient V8.
Did they try a 10 spd trans on one and engine revisions? Ford can make a 7.3 somewhat efficient on a much larger 3/4-1 ton truck...
The big three have all done so.

Thoughts?

It's really hard to have an efficient V8. GM does it best with their mills and the MPG comes at a durability cost in the lifter department. Toyota would have to pretty much copy the gen V GM engines with some tweaks. DI, high compression, cylinder deactivation funny business, all that. They chose to go hybrid and thats the right call for a half ton. My old 2016 GMC 6.2 was very efficient on the highway but city trips would still drink it up. The only way out of bad city MPG is the hybrid/phev option.
