2022 Frontier - P0615 code

P0615 but my truck starts fine. No warning lights on. Should I even worry about it? Comes back when it is cleared within a few drives.

Just so we are all on the same page, this seems to be more about the Park/Neutral signal than the relay itself looking at service data. I am slightly paranoid now that when I try to start my truck it won't start one day, but at the same time putting money into fixing this seems a bit pointless when I wouldn't even know about it without randomly scanning my truck.

I think this might mean that the relay is on when the vehicle is not in park or neutral - which it shouldn't be.

I would take it to a very, very safe open place, put it in D or something other than P or N, and very briefly see if it will turn over. If it does its not supposed to.

I agree, but at the same time I don’t want to have it not start at an inconvenient moment. Just trying to stay proactive I guess.

Yeah it’s out of warranty. And yeah I was trying to figure out exactly what the code meant, because that description is vague.

I did try the Nissan “confirmation procedure” in their service data. The suggestion was to clear the codes, then go P>R>N>D>R>P but you wait at least 3 seconds in each position, the code didn’t show up when I tried that.

I’ll try to start it in gear but I am a bit skeptical on that. The gear indicator in the cluster works just fine and I’d expect a 22’ vehicle to see that and not start if there was any ambiguity. But hey maybe not.

The description is actually pretty good. It tells you need a park/neutral signal.
If you locate the relay you can test for the signal voltage, should be probably 5V. If it’s not there, or perhaps it’s there when it shouldn’t be, it is likely the park/neutral switch.

I’m kinda guessing “there when it shouldn’t be” considering I don’t have starting issues. But yeah good point.

As far as I know the PNP switch is built into the shifter unit. At least it’s not supposed to be serviceable because the dealership fix for this has usually been to replace the entire shifter.

Was there anything spilled on the shifter at one point? It obviously still works well enough to send close enough voltage so that you don’t have starting issues.

Perhaps spraying some wd40 or electrical contact cleaner is not a bad idea? It may just need some cleaning.

I realize you are getting the park/neutral code, but should this happen again, make sure your brake lamps are lighting up when you have your foot on the brake pedal for the start sequence to happen.

Stop lamp switches are still an issue for Nissans of this vintage. I've heard of them failing on 2022 Frontiers and I own one myself.

I had the stop lamp switch fail on my 2019 Pathfinder that resulted in a no start, but no code or MIL on that one.

Perhaps spraying some wd40 or electrical contact cleaner is not a bad idea? It may just need some cleaning.

Stop lamp works fine, checked it. There is supposed to be a BCM code for starter relay circuit B aka stop lamp circuit, saw it when looking into my code, but it’s not a P code so most budget scanners can’t see it.

Hopefully the issue is isolated to something relatively simple like the gear selector assembly. Other than that, the only connection the 9AT has with the vehicle is through 4 wires. CAN bus high, CAN bus low, power and ground. All gear range range changing is done internal to the trans.
