Does a 2022 Canyon alternator shut off once the battery is at full charge? I understand some GM's do this to save fuel.

Gm has the most complicated RVC algorithm ever. It depends what the PCM has done to the battery since key on.

Watch this start to end. You'll stop looking at the voltage needle.

Yes, it is called Regulated Voltage Control.

This is a GM Techlink article from a while back about it: https://www.centerlearning.com/tmswebtree/techlink/images/issues/sep04/TL_Sept04.pdf

It has gotten a bit more sophisticated since this article. Previous iterations (like described in the article) use a pretty simple current sensor that surrounds the negative battery cable. This monitors current flow and is used to calculate battery state of charge. This is what your 2022 Canyon uses.

Modern implementations, like what you would find on a 2023 and newer Canyon/Colorado, use a LIN-based sensor right at the negative battery post to measure much more. It is able to calculate battery state of health as well as state of charge. The addition of battery SOH monitoring plays a significant part in start/stop operation and power management consideration like load shed and idle boost.

Neat tip: Turning on Tow/Haul Mode will disable RVC. This ensures full voltage is available back at the 7-pin for charging batteries or running accessories that may be in an attached trailer.

I wondered on a small car, like a cruze, if you flip the selector to manual mode if it'll do the same thing?

Guess it depends how firmware is written.

Actually I think its the opposite.

Although i was concerned for a while of my cruze pumping 15.7v, but it was probably cycling desulfate.

The biggest pitfall is how sensitive the style is with voltage drop.

Good grounds and clean connectors are an absolute must. Can't get by with the wiggle and hammer tap anymore with crusty posts.
