2021 Sienna - Can I use 0w-20 permanently?

I may get one if they ever catch up on the waiting list and I can test drive. Last I looked it was 6 months waiting.

Toyota did something amazing. First real innovation out of Toyota in 20 years.

There is no waiting these days unless you’re in Canada. They are widely available at MSRP. If you can’t find one locally, find one out of state (usually Midwest). My local dealers were still not interested in charging MSRP (except right at the end of the year), and I found a nice dealer in Indiana to sell me one. I did have to pay for transport to California.

Why? They gonna run out of it?
That’s actually not a bad idea because even though oil goes on sale at Costco at least 2-3 times per year, the next time it’s on sale the price might have gone up. I do that with the vitamins I get from Costco. As soon as I open one package I get ready to buy the next one as soon as the sale comes up.

Sure. Then you wreck or sell a vehicle you purchased all that oil for and the next post will be “can I use all this oil I have sitting around on my new car?” And around and around we go.

True. I stopped stocking up on oil a few years ago, although mainly because I moved into a much smaller place.

Any more than 6 months worth and it starts to get a little sketchy for me. I might buy 2 or 3 jugs to get the free shipping or meet a rebate purchase requirement but that is as far as I’ll take it.
My worry about stocking up for the Civic is that I’m always tempted by the latest oils (like VRP) With the Corvette I stocked up on a ton of the old (and possibly better) formula of M1 ESP Formula 5w30 a few years ago and am using up the last of it now. I’m glad I stocked up on that one. I won’t stock up with the newer formula just in case they change it again (this time hopefully for the better)

I am doubt we will see the 2x4.73L for 39.99CAD again with our dollar the way it is. Nevertheless, I stopped stockpiling too.

All you saying Walmart’s lack of 0w-16 availability, 5+ years ago yes. But not in 2025. No 0w16 by Supertech, but all other name brands, yes. Even HPL. Wouldn’t you know, HPL even has 0w-12.

Back to your regular scheduled program. No 0w16 Kirkland at Costco I give you that.

Yes, you can use 0w-20 permanently. It is more protective for your engine than 0w-16 and will inflict a tiny fuel efficiency penalty of less than 2%. I use 5w-30 at times in the Sienna hybrid. When I’m driving at upper highway speeds up a mountain/hill, I feel reassured and protected.

The Sienna weighs up to 1000 pounds more than a RAV4 hybrid (using the same engine) so it’s like loading up your RAV4 to the max. Load the Sienna with 7 passengers and stuff, and it deserves something much stouter than 0w-16. I feel as if this should qualify immediately for a severe oil service indication and a stouter oil.

Would this hold for a 2015 Sienna? I've never paid attention to the oil that goes into it, and after discovering this forum I feel like that is a huge miss.

You should be running 30 weight oil in that engine. In hot weather even 40 weight is fine. Haven't you ever wondered why your 2GR engine sounds like a washing machine full of bolts?

Agree, my 2GR-FE sound quieter on the highway using HPL euro 5w-30. I should have switched earlier from 0w-20.
You are a real fan of the 2GR's it seems. Can't blame you for that had a 2015 V6 Camry and a 2013 GS 350 - great engines for sure. Currently have a J35 V6 Accord and I'm switching to 5w30 my next oil change from 0w20. Will be interested to see if any difference is felt, negative or positive. J35 definitely starts quieter than the 2GR FSE in my 2013 GS but about the same noisiness as the Camry had.

Yepp, buy only the 2GR-FE Venza 14-15 and 2GR-FKS RX350 2019-2022. Avoid the other years according to the Car Care Nut due to cam tower silicone gasket leak at the cylinder head. The FKS has a plastic valve cover and a cam tower with gaskets in between. Idiots.

I stopped stocking up on oil because when something better comes out, I want to be able to use it.

I'm sure somewhere there's a guy still using the last of his CI-4+ oil because he stocked up "before they ruined it."
I buy a couple jugs at a pop since I maintain 4 vehicles. The two Mazda's get a 5K OCI and the Kia/Hyundai get 4K OCI's. I typically buy from Walmart to get free shipping.

Oil filters, I admint, I'm out of control on. I have 51 oil filters for my 2 Mazdas and around 15 for the Hyundai and Kia vehicles......... (In fairness, the Mazda filters, other than OEM, were purchased on a crazy good deal. The standard PG's were $7 a case........dirt dirt dirt cheap.) I also got a good deal on the PG XL variety at around $4 a filter.

As much as there are advanced in oil, the advances in oil filters (media in particular) make the argument even stronger for not stocking up.

When there's a new wonder filter on the market with a 15 micron rating (99%) and a 30k miles life rating, is a BITOGer going to burn through his stash or start using that new wonder filter?

By not stocking up, I don't have to worry about that.

That said, I consider having 12 filters on hand to be "not stocking up."

Oh interesting so you're saying the 2GR FSE is more reliable/better than the FKS? Pretty sure my '13 had the FSE. I guess the regular FE would be the least complicated so the most reliable.

Cannot say for sure about the FSE. U can watch the Car Care Nut utube on the 2GR series.

0W-16 is perpetually unavailable because someone is hoarding it all.
