a quick question related to end of year sales (@$17k) on a new 2019 jetta s. despite 6 year warranty the 8sp auto trans grinding at 1500rpm is a real, game stopping, worry. from what i read on internet vw is blowing off concerns. is it best to pass on looking at a 2019 jetta?

$17k for a brand new car that's decent size with a 6 year/72k bumper to bumper warranty is a no brainer. The Toyota transmission can be a bit finicky, but I don't think it is known for any failures. Camry, Avalon and RAV4 get the same transmission...aren't those the holy grail?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWF8F35

They do make the grinding sound, but as far as I know there have been no failures due to the noise. There have been reports of transmission fluid leaks, so that is something to consider. For the price and warranty I don't know that you can beat it.

thanks for replies. dishdude, interesting info about widespread use of same transmission in so many other, apparently trouble free, vehicles. gregk24, yes no failures...yet. leakage too? this as well as grinding doesn't sound like long term fun. i am hoping to hear from someone of a fix.

hmm, i'm seeing some new 2019 buick encores hit similar $17k + prices...

Having a 2019 Jetta S, I would pass. Its Fairly comfortable highway cruiser, but a cheap, cheap car.

Not is really not much room in the back seat. It looks bigger than it really is. All trunk.

Its sort of a 3/4 scale Focus/ Chrysler 200

Car has horrendous wheel hop problem in wet or snow. Happens quickly and Sounds and pounds like it will rip an axle out.

Front end is a very cheap mac strut and wont hold an alignment.

Shocks are way too soft and car has terrible roll control especialy at the rear axle.

The transaxle is really loud on the MT car too. I think there is an issue with transaxle mounts.
But I also recall reading about a TSB on the auto trans and failure form early adopters. I would search/

my DS power window is failing.

Power Brakes are very good but overboosted ( which I actually like on a passenger car)

Power steering is mid 60's Lincoln/Cadillac overboosted and completely devoid of feel. In fact it has negative feel if that's possible.

All I can say is Subaru Subaru Subaru! Impreza 5 door. Best in class by a tonne.

If I could get out of my lease now I would.

noooooo subies with its cvt + its a total DOG as my sisters 18 impreza, might look at a mazda or even a cheap kia optima with the best warranty + good room. girlfriends preowned 18 is great as it replaced her 13 malibu 2.5 using a qt on a thou at only 60 thou!!! for cheap the optima is great so far using NO oil with the specd 5 or 10 -30 we use, 5-20 is also listed for a possible 1/4 mpg gain with more engine wear likely. NO stop-start + a good standard 6 spd auto all good IMO!!

Wow. The VW ownership experience soured fairly quickly for you.

More a personal thing with him not specifically VW. I think he has posted owning like 50+ cars across his life so clearly not happy with many of them or tires quickly.

The auto trans should be an Aisin unit, so id not expect a lot of issues. Golf is a step up. If you get the sportwagen AWD it becomes a DSG trans instead of aisin toque converter based unit.

No, just frank about the car. I have med-high standards. Also just comparing to Subaru I've driven and my Wife's car.
Much more solid vehicle with good ( for FWD/AWD ) steering.

The front end caster is out-of -spec range and they wont print the "after" results anymore it or attempt a fix, because its "non-adjustable" which is nonsense.

Now the VW is fairly comfortable for an hour or two up front, the base display has excellent programming and design., esp the radio options. ride is great on the highway and fairly quiet. Rear visibility is very poor.

But, Id be in lemon law arbitration if I had a 3 year lease or owned it.

The steering has become horrendous and front tires are worn to 5/32 at 5K miles. They are in the back now.

So far it seem only Subaru ( or suzuki) can do a good front end with mac struts - from what i've driven.

Take a look at the 528iX BMW if you can swing it. Much more power and better trans.

The GLI is like 10 grand more out the door.

And the warranty is not there anymore.

the 1.4 has plenty of juice for most driving. But mine is a stick and I guarantee you that it is more responsive.

1.4 has Power and torque of a 2.8 litre 6 cylinder from 2k-4500 rpm. Just where you run it 95% of the time

Not 10 grand more. They were selling for sticker when they first came out, but not anymore. If you follow the 2019 Jetta prices paid thread on vwvortex, people are getting around 6-7k off sticker for both Jetta and GLI models in the last few months.
One guy bought a GL1 35th for $23,504 out the door, and that's not even an S model, which would be even less.

https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?9214993-2019-Jetta-prices-paid/page8

"'19 GLI 35th 6MT
Tornado Red
Monster Mats
Trunk Mats
2yr Service Plan

MSRP 28,484
Dealer Discount -5,000
VW Incentive -1,000
Dealer Adjustment -1,000

After Taxes and fees total out the door was 23,504

Put 2250 down, payment is 404 a month."

My dealer had a couple GLI and now has none so not an option.

But $16,800 and 23,500 are two different things.

My Buddies used certified BMW 528 i x drive is a much MUCH better car for less $$.

The transmissions are fine and none of the ones we drove had any grinding in the transmission... it is actually a very refined transmission IMO... this "grinding" is internet amplification...

S model Jetta's don't come with a spare (and others don't have a full size spare) so factor that in if important to you.

OP car is NOT typical at all, sounds like suspension components were bent? (did he have an accident)

The Jetta S with a manual transmission is a great value, they drive decently, (not sports cars but not bad either) better than avg for the class front seats too.
Decent acceleration, pretty roomy, and very good MPGs ! The price is right and the warranty was best in class..

They do exhibit a "grinding" type nose when going into 5th gear under light to moderate throttle. Even VW has admitted to it being related to the torque converter. I'm not saying it will or wont harm anything now or later, but it is there and they are aware.

Again, mine doesn't and none of the ones we drove did (4 cars other than ours). (Edit, guess I should say 3 others since one was a stick)

When did you purchase? Has the software updated been done? It may have been completed before purchase.
