I have a 2019 l87 and ive seen the recalls for the new models but find it hard to believe a 2021 motor can run the new 0-40 but a 2019 and a 2020 cannot.
I’m looking for opinions from people who don’t completely rely on what the owners manual says because their oil recommendations are decided on primarily by what the epa seems acceptable. Should I switch to a 0-40 or a 5-30? If I do not find answers I’m planning on running tests with different oil weights and doing an oil analysis to prove which is best. Thanks for any help

I've been using 5w-40 instead of 0w-20 in my 2021's L87 for almost all of it's life. It did get the free dealer change early at around 700 miles and maybe that helped to flush the suspected machining filings out and I ran that dealer change for under 3k miles then after that I noticed enough consumption with 0w-20 to where I got the low oil level message after about 4-5k or so.

With that low oil level message I distrusted 20 grade and went straight to 0/5w-40 and never had a low oil level message again and haven't needed to top up during the interval. Engine ran quieter to where I can hear the foam insulated gdi pump at the back to a degree and I saw almost nothing of an mpg drop like 0.1-0.2 tank average but there's too much variance in that. Go ahead and use 0/5w-40.

As for doing oil analysis there won't be enough data to be conclusive for the most part. I think they can be helpful but wear isn't represented well in them like how one would think. I think the real issue is the bearings being a bit damaged by the machining filings that weren't cleaned out well have the damage they caused be exacerbated by the low hths and maybe low oil pressure from it and I think auto start stop only makes it worse and thick oil helps with auto start stop wear too.

I'm contemplating using something thicker still like the new valvoline full synthetic heavy duty diesel with 4.3 hths. Or maybe m1 15w-50.

GM acknowledges it's an issue with the 19 and 20 but say the failure rate "wasn't as high" and not that they're not a problem. So they are a problem they just don't care enough.
