Hi All

I am needing to replace the rear shocks on my 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, and I am looking at either OEM, or KYB... OEM is only about $14 more then the KYB shocks.

Would KYB be a better shock then OEM... I think OEM is made by Mando , I tried to look for some markings but nada..

So price is not an issue, looking for the better build quality..

Thanks all!

there will be those on this forum who will always recommend KYB.. my experience has been they aren't the highest quality.. quality is hit/miss with that brand, more miss though. My thinking is this.. if you like the original/factory ride with the stock/oem shocks and they lasted you this long, go back to the same ones.

Then there is the other thought of wanting something "better" or more sporty, there's always looking at Bilstein if they make it for your SUV.

I'd ignore all the other stuff out there on the market, it's been a race to the bottom in terms of quality lately in the aftermarket

6 years is pretty bad for OEM, in my experience KYB lasts longer than that. Our Outback has overly soft rear damping, so I will be going to KYB when the time comes, but I guess if you are happy with how the OEM once worked, then just get them again. KYB do tend to be noticeably firmer than OEM when I have used them, but its probably best to ask on a Santa Fe forum for what works.

Just to add to the thread, I am needing to replace one due to it starting to leak (will be replacing both)..

And yea.. only 6 years is not good.. only 128,000km..

Maybe just get KYB in protest for poor OEM quality... I hate it when manufacturers cheap out on parts, but at least these are easy to replace.

If there is Bilstein shock you can use, buy that.
I replaced shocks in Forte, KYB front and Gabriel Ultra (supposedly maid by KYB) back, didn't feel difference in ride, I wish they made it a bit stiffer.

6 years on OEM ?!?! Did you go rock climbing with the truck ? Look for potholes ? Drive up and down a mountain, thru the woods ???. Shocks are easy enough to replace. May need the " blue wrench" a bit ( propane tank). Monroe has come up from the depths of hell with their quick struts, try their shocks.

For $14 more per shock, I'd stay with OE.
Do you know why your shock is leaking?
Did you overload the back end or hit too many potholes/sewer drains/manhole covers?... too often? You don't have to tell !
Maybe it was just bad luck !

The only rock climbing we did with the Santa Fe was the speed bumps at the mall....

Mando is OE? I see their ads when I’m watching, “The Rockford Files,” looks like legit 24 hr protection. Dunno about 72 below.

I would ask this….anything wrong with original? For example we used GM OE twice, and both times it leaked at about 50k, so we switched to Bilstein. OE is not always better. But just understand KYB in most applications is aftermarket.

OE, OEM, aftermarket. On this forum for some reason OEM is interchanged with OE quite a lot.

KYB is likely very good. But of course reviews are all over the place. Bilstein is a safe bet if it has your application.
