hey

I have a 2019 Ford expedition and recently is been making a cold start rattle/grinding and it’s been to the dealer 2 times now and they have replaced the cam phasers and they say it fixed now but it’s still making the noise. I change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles and maintain all other fluid correctly. anything I can do or anything to identify and fix the problem.

Thanks
Jacob

HI
It’s a 3.5 EB engine. The engine has 32,000 miles on it and we live in Washington and live in eastern part and it get cold probably -6 during winter and I use a 5w30 either synthetic blend or a full synthetic oil.

I seriously cannot wrap my mind around synthetic-blend oils in turbo engines.
Use ACEA A3 oils in turbo engines. Personally, in winter there, I would use in that engine something like Mobil 1 ESP 0W30 (I have it in Tiguan now) or Castrol Edge 0W30.

So it's the 3.5 EB engine... Miles? Climate? All temperatures? What oil do you use?

Did the noise start suddenly, has it always done it or has it gradually gotten worse?

Need more info to help.

The oil filler cap says 5w30 and its under warranty so cant Change oil type until end of warranty just in case

Just make sure you keep all your oil change receipts in case you need another major warranty repair.
Yep always do. Write down How many quarts I used and what kind of filter and check all the fluids and not the condition and staple receipts to prove it

What would you recommend I do to take care of this. Should I take to another dealer or is there something causing the problem over and over right after going to the dealer.

Use Mobil 1 ESP 5W30, Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4, Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30. Castrol Edge and Pennzoil Platinum Euro L are both available in Wal mart. Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 is usually on sale in NAPA.

Ok thank you ill use it. Do you think the problem is caused by the oil that’s being used? Ford recommends synthetic blend or at least that’s what the parts guy says a the dealer

These oils far exceed anything Ford recommends. I cannot see any benefit of synthetic blend except lower cost of oil.
My choice would be in this order:
Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 (regular price of this oils is $12.49 per quart, NAPA has it on sale for around $5.50).
Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5w30 (Wal Mart, $22 for 5qt. Exceptional oil).
Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4 (Wal Mart, $24 per 5qt. Very good stuff, except Edge is Full Saps oil and not best choice for DI engines).

Ok thank you. Do you think it would help the ticking noise when cold starting? Or just help the overall performace

It could. WHo knows. Overall, these oils are going to perform much better. Are they going to solve mechanical issues that you might have? No. But, oil might be source of ticking. And these are very thick W30, almost W40 oils with min. HTHS 3.5. You really cannot run anything better than this in an engine. I personally was contemplating Expedition recently due to my needs. Decided not to go. But, if I would get one, this is what I would run during warranty. After? Maybe use Castrol EDGE 0W30 (exceptional stuff) or even 0W40.
