Well, it is unfortunate but my friend put his trust and confidence in the auto parts counter person who sold him 0W-16 because it is better to run thinner in the winter. What the Farmer! What is even worst is the car dealership technician did the oil change without questioning the viscosity grade.

A Shakespearian comedy of human errors. I strongly recommended 5W-30 all year round since south eastern PA winter temperatures are typically above -20F.

If a customer feels that don't get clearly communicated to-they think the dealerships are screwing them. If they listen to them when the customers say "use this oil" they get criticized.

Just another day on here.....

What's the manual say?

My Silverado runs 0w/20 all year...pretty sure the Salt Lake Valley gets colder than where you are at. And we have these things called "mountain passes" we drive in 90 degrees when it gets warmer.

Probably blows your mind my wife's BMW with a direct injected turbo that supposedly does a 13.9 1/4 mile specs 0W12.
If it's specifically designed to run on that, sure. But if a manufacturer is taking engines that were designed for a certain oil, like 0W-20 and then coming out and being like, "hey, it's fine! run 0w-16, it coo!" that's a bit different.

Google says lowest for SLC is -22* whereas the lowest temp in PA was -42* in general. Philly's record is -11* lol

From what I've seen and heard :) in my cars 5*F and below is the lower limit for 5W-30 oils. The engine sounds like a tractor the first few minutes.

If the car is kept out on the streets (not in a garage) at 5*F temp. 5W-30 oils get challenged.

My friend said the oil cap was labeled as 0w-20.
So what ? Honda doesn't make caps that read "0W-16 or 0W-20" but the manual says 0W-16 or 0W-20 is recommended. Not that one is preferred over the other or that you can use one if you can't find the other. They are equal.

Why are you recommending anything if a) you send him to buy the oil and b) have the oil changed at a dealer ? Plus, neither the counter person nor the tech did anything wrong, in fact, they are 100% right per Honda.

The average winter temperature in Philadelphia is 35 degrees. Its colder than that in Salt Lake. Not getting in to a you know what contest with you.

They don’t? Qweird. Someone should tell Honda they messed up and gave the wrong oil cap.

They did everything right simply by the fact they listened to the customer and installed what the customer wanted/ brought in. This is another Dealer Bash Thread- without merit.

I’m just saying, you have no idea where he lives in PA. His temps could most certainly be lower than SLC depending on where he lives.
