It might be the L87 in a 2018 truck. the 8th digit is a J, which sounds like its the L87
We charge $2100 for one side and about $5000 for both with Camshaft. GM parts. Dealership is usually 5k for one side only.
If the cam & lifter are both bad, how do they ensure the oil galleries arent contaminated with filings or shrapnel?Just be thankful it isn’t L83. Engine out to replace cam.
That being said probably DOD intake lifter failure. Worst case you need a cam too.
sounds like he is going to be in the ballpark upwards of $11,000 CAD at the Silverwood Chevrolet dealer in Edmonton Alberta. We charge $2100 for one side and about $5000 for both with Camshaft. GM parts. Dealership is usually 5k for one side only.
Skip the brake fluid exchange , alignment , air filter , rear pads and rotors , axles and you have significant savings by doing yourself. Absolutely do the oil cooler lines ( likely leaking at a crimp) , vacuum pump likely has a hard brake pedal or isn't building up quick enough causing a hard pedal?sounds like he is going to be in the ballpark upwards of $11,000 CAD at the Silverwood Chevrolet dealer in Edmonton Alberta.
Seems a little high to me, but he agreed to their "certified service inspection".
$90 complete veh. inspection
$941 to remove head
$6328 Replace Lifters And inspect cam (cam was found to be good so no need to replace saving $5855
$518 Replace Engine oil cooler lines ??? he didn't notice any oil leakage or require topping off.
$748 Replace vacuum pump ??? What is this for? Does it contribute to the AFM cylinder deactivation?
$1033 replace rear pads & Rotors, (we can do this ourselves for less, I am sure)
$1100 replace left inner & outer CV joint boots??? I don't know if there was an issue, and if they doubling up on labor?
Additional Cautionary recommendations:
$190 top off brake fluid, which shouldn't be low,
$170 four wheel alignment
$76 air filter replacement
Hopefully they haven't done the extra additional service without checking in with him.
he is 23, I will probably be the one footing a large portion of this bill
I haven't seen an updated estimate, but after they add shop fees and additional expenses and taxes it wont be a cheap fix!

My shop software has pictures I can send in the vehicle inspection ( digital) don't hesitate and call for pictures. Any good technician/service writer is going to understand and take a moment out of there day for pictures ! Not sure if the newer ones do but the body style before it did and the body style before that. Trans cooler lines and oil cooler lines !Are the oil lines known to leak?
I am 3 hours away. I wish I was able to see the issues they are pointing out.
Hopefully they are able to remove the lifters, seems they cause issues and if they can't remove require complete engine swap.
I just hope they aren't taking advantage of a young man. This bill would really set him back.
Thankfully I am able to help him out, using my line of credit at a reduced interest rate. I told him he could make payments on the principal and I would write off the interest, essentially offering him an interest free loan.
I will likely cut him a break and pay it off early.
I expect the complete bill may come to as high as $15,000 CAD
I hope he is telling them only to do the engine.
I am sure some of the other stuff we can tackle and save shop rate fees.
With their estimate they sent out stock photos showing cv joints and brake rotors. My shop software has pictures I can send in the vehicle inspection ( digital) don't hesitate and call for pictures. If your not impressed with the gm dealer . Definitely don't hesitate to find one you are impressed with ! What does Google reviews say about the place ? When I worked for gm our local dealership truly cared about the service experience. The Chevy dealership down the street just seemed to care about the sale ! Your spending a lot of money. Make sure you feel comfortable with who you spend it with because if there is an after repair issue you want to feel it will be taken care of !With their estimate they sent out stock photos showing cv joints and brake rotors.
Not very hapoy with this shop.
He initially took it to a Mazda dealer to get the code reader and an initial diagnosis, just because it was right next to his place of work it was parked after first experiencing symptoms and CEL.
The Mazda dealer pretty much made a video of their process.
I am impressed with this place.
How do you pull it out of there in a state of disasembly? Still going to be charged shop labor on what they have done, then hope all parts are accounted for or next shop be questioning you.If your not impressed with the gm dealer . Never had one leak - guess that’s the perspective difference between a lifetime GM owner vs a GM mechanic …lifter only replacement even with all seals, bolts, gaskets etc. 11,000 seems quite high.
And yes GM oil and transmission cooler lines leak all the time
Disagree. Modern cars' engine computers compensate for lower octane gas.Probably cracked/broke the piston because of the regular unleaded.
these trucks will aggressively pull timing as needed to keep from spark knocking.Disagree. Modern cars' engine computers compensate for lower octane gas.
I have run regular, mid grade, and premium (recommended) in our 6.2L L92 powered 07 Denali. Gas mileage deceases (timing gets retarded) when not using premium.Disagree. Modern cars' engine computers compensate for lower octane gas.
your 07 is not DI. DI began in 2014 with the body change.I have run regular, mid grade, and premium (recommended) in our 6.2L L92 powered 07 Denali. Gas mileage deceases (timing gets retarded) when not using premium.
I have gotten knock detection warnings on the digital information center a few times. No cracked piston(s) thank goodness.
Cracked pistons do occur and are discussed on a GM SUV forum I've been a part of for almost 6 yrs.
It’s the volume of vehicles that is the difference. You see one, I see manyNever had one leak - guess that’s the perspective difference between a lifetime GM owner vs a GM mechanic …
One?It’s the volume of vehicles that is the difference. You see one, I see many
My point is I probably see more GM vehicles in a week than you have owned over the yearsOne?
I get the many but my first new Chevy was1985 - many since
