2017 Subaru Impreza - direct injection, a concern?

Hello

Contemplating trading my 2010 is250 for a 2017 impreza later this year when it arrives. One concern is that they are moving towards direct injection for the 2017 model. The 2016 is port injection. My is250 is notorious for carbon build up at the valves and this worries me which is why i want to rid of it plus i miss driving manual.

Should i be concerned for subaru's direct injection? Has subaru made any advances to combat carbon build that is effective?

I would settle for a 2016 model but the 2017 looks much better and i am willing to wait for it. Hope they dont ditch the manual trans in the new re-design!!

Direct injection is not on my list. Besides carbon build up and fuel pump failures, I don't want highly flammable gasoline at 2000+ psi in my car. Fine when new but as it ages, I won't take the chance. Too much potential maintenance issues.

You are full of POO POO .Di is as safe as your ford pinto is.
With people like you , we would still be using carburetors and soft fuel lines that cause car fires.
Wonderful technology . I have it my 2011 Sonata and average 32 MPG in mixed driving.
I Clean the throttle body every year, run good top tier gas , and a bit of B-G fuel system cleaner with every oil change.
60000 trouble free miles so far.
 
The last Subaru engine I worked on (BRZ-S) had Port & Direct Injection.

As for the 2,000 PSI of fuel pressure.......Don't worry! The High Pressure Lines are all steel, Some Modern Diesels operate at 15 Times that, It's my belief that Diesel Fuel will "Auto Ignite" easier than Gasoline (Like getting sprayed on a hot exhaust manifold)
 
In the life of development of the gas engine, DI is early in its development. Some say it's no problem but then if just once in a while it is and your car is that once in a while you're stuck. I'd bet that the dealers stand off anyone with such a problem and to get a resolution would be difficult. So, if you're an early adopter type then have at it. At least you will approach your purchase with more knowledge than the average person.
 
DI has been around for over 10 years the major flaws have been ironed out..

If you need to have the valves cleaned once every 100000miles and EVERYONE else does.. it wont be a big deal because they will have an easy method to do it.

Personally its not on my list of "must haves" but its also not on the "deal breaker" list either.

The new systems are nothing like the very first DI that were absolutely terrible at valve deposits.
 
DI is fine. Why even get port fuel injection when a carb is so simple and predictable? Bicycles dont even need a fuel system. DI offers a lot of advantages and the drawbacks are manageable. So you either are ready for the latest and greatest engines or you arent.

Agreed; I also don't like fuel pumps- gravity feed is more than adequate. And who needs a starter when a hand crank works just fine?

The first vehicle I know of that offered a DI equipped engine was 13yrs ago in 2003 with the introduction of the 2004 Isuzu Rodeo w/ a DI 3.5L. Isuzu NA at the time was kind of a GM/Delphi systems test dummy. They were Isuzu engines with lots of Delphi electronics and systems.

All that aside, if the 2017 Subaru DI lineup are PZEV certified and you live in a PZEV State, nearly all that expensive DI equipment will be covered for 15yrs/150K miles anyway. Just pray it poops at at 149K. LOL.

A carbon cleaning would be much cheaper than buying a new car.

Missing a manual, is a better excuse to upgrade. I'd buy a new Golf or Sportwagen 4motion/Alltrack (if AWD needed), though.
 
so the 2017 impreza's will not have a manual gear box...i will go take a drive in the 2016 and see how it is to drive.
