Direct Injection-Is it a good thing?

Gasoline is actually oil as much as diesel is. Fuel dilution with diesels can ruin an engine pretty quickly also. Many lube manuals for diesels specify maximum fuel dilution limits, and it is not very much, especially when viewed in conjunction with degradation in viscosity.

They can, but it will go away same as gas if HWY driving is utilized except if injector is leaking. Problem is in the U.S. gas is high in sulphur, while diesel is ultra low sulphur which will not affect TBN depletion as much as gas.

30 ppm sulfur limit in current gasoline is not really substantive. Sure double the 15 ppm of diesel, but diesel not long ago was 500 ppm. Not sure gasoline was ever that high. Also, gasoline is proposed to go to 10 ppm starting in 2017 according to EPA.

If you think 30ppm is not a lot you should see UOA I have using 0W40 Mobil 1 and attempt to use Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 in VW CC 2.0T.
Mobil 1 0W40 TBN was at 2.6 after 5K and ESP at 1.9 after 3K.
30ppm is a lot! Just because diesel was at 500ppm does not mean anything.
Yes moving to 10ppm is like: finally we will have gasoline like rest of developed, industrialized world.
Right now there is no way I would run OCI longer then 5K in DI engine. And that is OCI using High-SAPS oil.

No fuel dilution problems seen in UOA on Fiesta St's. There's one with 160k and no performance issues.

Do not expect fuel to show up in large numbers. My used oil analysis had fuel No issues in performance too.

My MS3 was running fine at 158k when I flipped if for my 2er. As the last used oil analysis shows, a low TBN was never an issue- even with OCIs over 8,200 miles:
