2017 Forester OCI question

If she commutes 70 miles per day and she’s happy with what she has keep that. My wife does similar mileage in an VW Tiguan and it consumes vehicle but she is happy with her vehicle in every way.

First thing that came to mind since its not your favorite car, maybe let it go another 25K miles or more and do one of those youtube videos of the thick goo draining out of it? Yeah not the best advice but? :ROFLMAO:

Don't some oils advertise they can go over 25K miles?:ROFLMAO:

My wife's 2017 Forester has an oil change scheduled at the dealer in 2.5 weeks. She's at 6500 miles and will be at least 7700 to 8000 when the oil change arrives. I changed it with Kirkland 0w20 in early June. It had a decent amount of town driving over the summer (1500 miles or so) and the last 3 months has been 70 miles, round-trip, commute daily, so basically all "easy" miles since August.

If I had an excuse to buy a new car, I might take it up with her. I want a minivan. She laughs at me and says she won't drive a minivan. I guess I have no shame. Or I'm a huge loser. I'm not certain. I'll schedule therapy to find out.

So, anyway, will the engine blowup and we'll end up with an Ascent even though I want a minivan (the couch isn't the worst place to sleep if I REALLY want my minivan)? Or will the car be fine, aside from rear wheel bearings every 17 miles, like a typical Subaru of this vintage?

I need your support through this matter. My sleep depends on it.

Thanks in advance to all the caring members of BITOG for helping me out. used oil analysis from the era of this Subaru would be helpful, or maybe not. Depends what they show.
Most people who get a minivan have a bunch of kids to haul around along with all their gear for football or soccer or ??

I'm thinking a Chrysler Pacifica with a hellcat swap might change her mind.

The Subaru Ascent is a great vehicle If that's what you or your wife want to get, I would much rather be driving one of those than any minivan. I would be happy to help you with anything Subaru related as I have an abundance of experience with the brand for 23+ years.

As far as oil change intervals, yes you should stick to the 6,000 mile recommendation as a maximum but for the engine in your specific model year vehicle it should be fine if you run a little over on the mileage for your oil change interval as it is still a port injected engine and it can tolerate the extra miles fairly easily.

If you do buy a newer Subaru I would recommend doing oil change intervals at 5000 miles due to the nature of their direct injection engines.

Regarding the mini van comments at the beginning of this thread, when it came time to decide if we need a minivan, we went with a Suburban instead. No regrets. We still have our third Burb.

On the other hand I always noticed mini vans, at least the early ones, were pretty cheap and when coupled with long loans, were reachable for cash strapped young families. In this world there is something for everyone. :D

Minivans now are a specialty vehicle with limited selection with Toyota/Honda owning market. Chrysler not sure if the sales numbers are fleet sales or actual profitable consumers.
