2017 Forester OCI question

I forgot to mention it has a Fram Orange Can (FOC, pronounced "fawk") on it with the Kirkland oil rated for 10k on the box. Does this change your view?

It will be 100% fine. With no direct injection, and all highway, it's pretty easy on the oil. Have you ever bought a used car with some higher mileage from the 2nd, or 3rd owner? It likely had an oil change or 4 missed...

I would make the level is still good, and if its half a quart low, pour in a half quart of any engine oil you have around to make you feel better.
My poor old Focus would burn almost 2 quarts per 10-12k mile OCI in the last couple years, so it got a quart of rotella 15W40, because I wasn't opening a jug of the good stuff to just run it for 1-2k until I changed it.

The oil will be fine for 8k. Wouldn’t hurt a thing to step up to a 0/5W-30 in the future though.

The Carnival is a nice ride, we picked one up earlier this year. Don’t get why people hate minivans so much.

My youngest daughter and her husband bought a Subaru. I'm pretty sure she's testing the max OCI before the engine blows. Currently over 10k, so unfortunately, you're probably "safe" at 8k. I'm trying to decide if I should distance myself from her now, or wait until her engine blows, get in a few snide remarks, and let her do the distancing.

So after owning a 13 Crosstrek and this Forester and an early 2000's Forester, I've concluded "a quart every 4-5k is what makes a Subaru a Subaru." The others didn't eat as many lug studs and wheel bearings. This 2017 has really ticked me off. Should've kept the 2006 instead of upgrading

Our dog is old and basically blind. I get that empty feeling in my heart when I open the patio door and she walks head first into the wall instead. She's a great dog though. Love her more than anything, except maybe minivans.

Also, I'm sorry to hear your family oil change issues may be leading to a sort of "falling out." Hopefully you can work through all of this and come to a compromise on what constitutes being disowned from the family.

It would be highly recommended to start on Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 as it’s almost a given that your oil control rings are gunked up causing the consumption. I know all about it with my ‘14 Outback.

I'm not a fan of open marriages. I mean, why get married in the first place if you're not going to be monogamous. You need to be concerned about the image you put out in the world driving a Carnival. It screams responsible person and a lot of women dig that in a man. A lot women liked my old Camry station wagon.

Consider the Ecogard S4615. It's only $6 on Amazon right now, and it's a snazzy green color

Use 5w30 oil. I like Walmart brand Supertech Advanced High Mileage 5w30. It's a good price.

The valve body is good for 150k or so

$1200 to buy it from the dealer, $800 from one of those online dealers, $2500 parts and labor for the dealer to do it for you.

Did the control arm bushings go on you yet?

$6 isn't too bad. I figure if it's running on bypass I'm getting an epic flow. I once read on here someone said something about flow is greater that filtration. So I quit caring about the bypass pressure.

Does your wife know you have this much "in stock"? If not, start changing the oil every other weekend and tell her it's the only way to guarantee the engine will last. Perhaps she'll agree to get your minivan before your stock is depleted. Pour the "old" oil into the empty containers for later use disposal.

I have a few singles of 0W20. I'll keep using the Kirkland until I run out of single quarts of Napa I use for top ups. Then I'll look into the Valvoline Restore and Protect. Actually, hopefully, by then I'll have a minivan. But most of your posts are pretty neutral or vague in giving me facts I can use to prove to her that she's wrong and a minivan is what our relationship needs.
