2016 Mazda 6; maintenance suggestions?

Looks like I’m taking over maintenance duties on one of these. It’s not a Speed. I have zero idea on mileage or maintenance history although they did tell me the oil change has less than 500 miles to go. Family member is having issues and this will be one less thing for them to worry about.

I’ll be changing oil and filter very soon, I’m assuming there’s a gasket or crush washer for the plug, and I’ll take a look at the air filter because I’m sure it hasn’t been changed in the last 4-5 years. Any common issues with this gen of 6? Do they have a programmable maintenance reminder? This person definitely shouldn’t go beyond 5000 miles for an oil change due to short tripping and not driving more than 20 miles for work and then going home.

One last thing, what coolant do the Mazdas use? Probably should dump what I can and refill. Is there a bleeder valve to purge the air?

Hey there, I have a 2016 Mazda6, purchased it new, and I can't speak to coolant changes as I still need to do a flush (gasp) ... all tests of the coolant have come back perfect (acidity/litmus paper and visual inspection). Still should get done at the 10 year point. I will use the Prestone funnel tool which helps significantly. The vacuum tool/technique might be a good way to go too.

I ran Mazda moly 0w20 for the first 100k or so, then ended up switching to Costco Ow20 to match my Yukon.

Yes there is a crush washer but honestly it isn't a big deal, I have reused with no issues.

Depending on your trim, there may or may not be a maintenance reminder. Mine is the base spec and has no reminder.

I have done 7.5k intervals up to about 175k then I switched to 5k, filter replacement every other oil change.

Don't forget the cabin filter, it's an easy change behind the glovebox. Just have to remove the shock absorber/damper that connects to the glovebox.

Coolant is FL-22, the Mazda p/n is 0000-77-508F-20. The crush washer for the drain plug p/n is 99564-1400.

Great cars, don't see a lot of issues beyond basic maintenance. Keep an eye on the belt tensioner, they are hydraulic and we do a fair amount of them.

Is the same crush washer used for the transmission drain and fills?
I don't want to have to drop the belly pan to find out....

Yes. The washer for the plug on top is 99564-1800, slightly larger. That was the washer they used on a lot of the older models, like NA Miatas and other cars of that vintage.

FYI: there also are plenty of forums out there dedicated to the Mazda 6. That community is very helpful and is always willing to help with any questions you may have.
The 6 was a sleeper in the Mazda lineup. Crazy that it became more popular after Mazda discontinued it.

I recently bought a '21 and I haven't found very active communities for it, actually. The one website forum I found was very stale.... Most activity is a reddit forum, from what I've found.

What forum(s) are you speaking of ? I'll definitely check them out.

How many miles ?

ATF needs replacing. Drain and refill very easy.
