Alright, this should be the last post I make about asking about certain cars (I hope).

This week my grandmother and I are going to look at Grand Caravans. She wants to also look at a couple other cars, and in a comparable price range I see the Hyundai Tucson. There's a 2016 for sale for $17,600.

Any known big issues? A local dealer is also asking $17,400 for 2016 Dodge Grand Caravans for the base models.

Well yeah she doesn't want a $30k SUV.

Since the Grand Caravans are $17,400, so I looked at similarly priced cars. They don't seem that different to me. She doesn't want anything high end, she's never used a computer before, so navigation, premium stereo, leather, power seats, power doors, etc. Means nothing to her. She'll be thrilled with a base model.

Correct, the $17k Tucson is usually the 2.0 NA engine with a conventional AT and FWD. All solid.
 
I rented one and it's decent vehicle. I think trim was called se or something, basic but decent.

I cannot fathom why anyone would consider the base caravan except if they needed inexpensive 7 passenger capability often or hauling cargo about. That specific version has nice engine/transmission but everything else is horrid. I doubt your grandmother falls into either bucket.

I think the Hyundai warranty is lots better than the Dodge.
 
Dodges power train warranty was shortened in 2016 from 5yr/50,000 to 3yr/36,000 if that means anything.

I love our GC and I never thought I would say that about a mini van.

If you can really get both for under 18k like you posted, just have her get what she likes more. She's older now, she deserves to shop for what she likes.

Dodge's website says it's still at 5 years/60k miles
 
Nick, those prices are loss-leaders to get you to the dealer. Best to call and ask if that exact car is on the lot before you go. Are you really going to subject Gram to the Phoenix new car high-pressure circus? Have you bought a new car before?

I've been with other family members that have bought new cars.

I'm not seeing what the big deal is? She hasn't even test driven anything yet. They have 6 or 7 vans at that price.
 
Is she specifically looking for a Minivan / CUV versus a smaller vehicle?? This thread made me think of the Kia Soul because I remember reading H/K was surprised with the high take rate on these from the 65 and over set. Evidently, the ingress and egress is good for older, less nimble people and are both popular as daily drivers and for "snowbird" travel use. I know the Soul has gotten much better over the least few model years but is definitely on the small side.

She has a 2012 Jeep Patriot currently and hates it. Not near enough power and it's really small. She doesn't like the little toaster SUVs.
 
So she has a trade. Probably her best chance at not taking a royal beating is trading FCA for FCA. Then again maybe not. Are you and Gram doing the car buying? The sales vultures will be licking their chops when they see a young fella and his grandma coming in...

A friend here has good luck buying base model Hyundai cars in Phx using the internet sales dept, but it doesn't work so well with a trade. Good luck and do your homework.

FWIW the Tucson and Patriot are fairly close in size, the Tucson is a wee bit bigger.
 
Can you sell the Jeep for her?

On my 2006 Ford 500 in very nice condition body/mileage the dealership gave the owner $3K on a new Ford Escape. The dealership paid it at $6K but took $5K.

The 2012 Jeep trade in value make take a hit. If you can get half of the difference between Dealer Trade In and Private sales that could be a lot of $$$ for her.
 
She'll be trading in my mom's 2003 Buick Rendezvous, and my mom will be driving the Patriot. Gonna go look at the vans today.

They can lick their chops all they want, they won't be doing any funny business, I'm not gonna put up with that.
