BMW guys,

I’m looking at a 2016 340i with 49,000 miles. It’s the b58 straight six turbo with 8 speed automatic. It has regular service records. It appears to be a lease turn in and is in perfect condition. From what I can see online these models are quite a bit more reliable than the previous generation.

Are there any problem areas to look out for?

Not sure about the rest of the car, but the engine's in those are among the most reliable of the recent engines from BMW.

If I were to purchase a new(er) BMW, that would be the ONLY engine I'd consider.

depends on what you think is reliable. It will never be a 1990 Honda. But the performance and efficiency are second to none and you’ll have a smile on your face- except on the rare occasion when you’re waiting for the tow truck 😂. It’s definitely more reliable than my n54 but I only have 235k.

The block itself is good and i believe that has a second gen zf8 but the turbo can be hit or miss. I think it'll be a fine car as long as you get it fully inspected before buying it.

You said lease turn in so i expect its the dealer. have the dealer give you a full inspection report,

That B58 is quite reliable. Some minor coolant leak issues, but nothing to fret about. I would have an alignment done to make sure the front camber is in spec. A serious pothole hit will push the strut through the knuckle, requiring replacement of both. Increased camber on a front wheel will show this damage.

The Car wizard isca little mistaken on the E60 BMW's. The Shenyang plant produced some e60's However due to displacement taxes (Goofy I know) they never assembled, or shipped the E60 with the S85 V10.

My Father had an F30 for 5 years (albeit a 2.0 diesel with the ZF 8HP), put 170k on the clock in that time and nothing ever went wrong, ever. Most reliable car I've ever known. Oil changes, filter changes, brakes and tyres is all it ever had.

+1 on "go for it" if the deal is a good one. A clean service history is nice but not everything is reported to those history places (CarFax, Autocheck, etc.)

I would even say drive a few of the same model, to compare apples to apples.

he’s a good tech but still doesn’t know what he’s talking about

Thanks everyone, it drives like a dream and has the 19” staggered wheel option. Is that some sort of sport package?

Congrats on you purchase!
Is this to replace one of the Ford's in the stable, or is it an addition?
Regardless, remember to update your sig (y)

It looks to have the Sport trim level. The M Sport package adds more aggressive trim pieces and an M Sport suspension. Now for my usual advice to to first time BMW Owners:
Join BMW CCA(a subscription to the British magazine BMW CAR is also a good idea if you are a hard core fan and a DIY type)
My current BMW service regimen:
Oil- LL-01 Every 10k miles/1 year
Brake Fluid- DOT4 Every 2 years(6 months for track use)
Coolant- BMW coolant Every 2-3 years
ATF- BMW or ZF every 60k miles, including pan/integral filter
Diff(open)- GL-5 75W-90
Transfer case(xDrive)- BMW TC fluid(when indicated by scan, reset adaptations at the same time)

Thank you sir,

Can I use the peak European blend? It appears to be the same blue formula. Also, not sure how i feel about using 0w20 in a turbo bmw. I’m thinking Castrol edge 0w40. I’ll be using this car daily for long interstate commutes, running the kids around town, etc. Florida climate. No track time planned at this time.

The Peak Blue is fine; If you have a BMW CCA member discount offered by a dealer the BMW coolant may be available at a comparable price. I'd just run any oil that actually meets BMW LL-01- BMW or Castrol would be my choices.
A few more bits of advice-
FCP Euro and the BMW Mini Parts Store are my go-to online parts sources
I'd add a 300ml can of Liqui Moly Motor oil Saver at every oil change
