I think if the car is ferrociously powerful, the time for it to transit through a given gear... especially a lower gear - is so short (and the time it takes to shift gear is so relatively-long by comparison)... well, it feels like you are continually interrupting the forward progress of the car with your gear shifts. So I suppose - for me - in a really fast car, it is a negative to have a manual transmission. That being said, for a slow car, all the way to a moderately quick car - and with a reasonable-effort clutch and nice-shiftaction manual - and for an individual who takes pride in really learning how to shift smoothly (and for some dyed-in-the-wool guys like me - to heel and toe and double de-clutch too) - well, you've just 'GOTTA have a manual. Some of the time I feel frustrated, and ask... why did I get the manual? But most of the time I feel, wow, this is just RIGHT... and 'most every time I really look forward to getting in the car and driving.

I agree for the most part, but even in a ferociously fast car, it's more fun to have a manual if you're not racing for money or standing.

My former boss told me today he just bought a new Audi Q5 (I think it was the 5). White over tan, it probably has more bells and whistles than he can count. It has the lane departure warning, the "something's coming up in your blind spot" flashing lights, and the auto stop start. He's not sure how to turn the latter off permanently, though he says it's pretty seamless (if a little disturbing until you get used to it).

I asked if it had run-flat tires, and he didn't know. He's not a big "car guy" -- he's kept his Toyota Highlander for 16 years now, and in fact still has it.
