I don't think that I've ever seen on this site before, when someone else gets a new pickup truck, and then some faceless person wants to stand and take a pee all over it, and be a complete pessimist about it.

Many times, it is one of the happiest days in a guy's life, and then you have someone on the sidelines, acting like this.

I don't know. I just don't know.

We knew. We all knew......... Children have impulse control issues. There was no way, he wouldn't revert back to [censored] on this thread.

Fine, I am done with this thread. See you in 6 months or less with the new model year problems start...

FYI I tried to drop it but the comments kept coming...

You are severely misinformed. All of the above HAVE been in pickups for many years now.

It's aluminum FRAME parts and Direct Injection that are new on this model. That must be the "etc." above, right?

As I have stated many times before, we use GM trucks for our living here. If you could prove any other brand was as good for our duty we would buy it. Really, we would!

We all understand your distrust of all things GM. But we don't all share in it!

You did not read my posts it is not just GM. Ford, Dodge, any brand that is moving too fast without testing. So you have a 2014 GM with 150k miles on it with no problems?

1000mi now and all's well! Serious question..... was recently looking around underneath the truck, just getting to know her, and noticed that the black 'paint' on the frame was not really paint at all, but rather a thick tar-like coating that I could easily scratch with my fingernails. Is this tar-like undercoating (with only shiny metal underneath it) a common thing or is this new?

Really? Are you new?

Although I will concede it is usually the Clark Howard / Suzie Ormand financial advice circle jerk club that "takes a pee all over it"....

It is definitely not new, I think it is a form of cavity wax - corrosion control is the job... don't scratch anymore off...

I second that. Not sure what it is made off but it is some sort of under coating, my 02 has it.

Very interesting... I noticed on my bosses new 2013 Silverado that the undercoating was coming off in chunks. I was not impressed, but then again, looking at most new vehicles these days anything painted "black" underneath appears to be extremely cheaply painted.

I'd defer to more knowledgable persons here, but IMO it's a bad sign. Any nick will let water in to that shiny metal, with predictable results. Unless if that coating can be heated up yearly and will "heal" I'd think about oil coating. Of course, I bet you could do nothing and the frame would be absolutely fine for 10 years plus.

Edit: oh, the place where it was "coming off in chunks" was in the tubular crossmembers. Again, this was a 2013, so it may be nothing like the 2014. YMMV.

Yeah, I understand the coating is for corrosion protection, but, if memory serves, my '04 F150 (that I gave to my son) has real paint on the frame. I'll have to see if I can 'scratch' the frame next time son comes to the house. I was just curious if this tar-coating is a GM thing or if most manufacturers are doing it these days. Rust is not an issue where I live, so no biggie.

Note where the coating has been 'scraped' away near this hole in the frame. I think this was a tie-down point during the train ride from the factory. Again, not a big deal for me, but a potential source of problems for rust belt folks?

The big brown truck just brought me a pair of these. I am going to mount them under the rear bumper on the trailer hitch and wire them up for use as reverse lights. I saw an installation on one of the Silverado discussion forums. Looked neat and appears to work great.

Bringing back an old discussion for an 18 month ownership update.

Recalls: 4-5, don't remember exactly. All were very minor and taken care of during oil change visits. Think this truck will get caught up in the global gargantuan air bag recall from what I am hearing, so expecting another recall notice sometime later this year.

Repairs: One. An AC freon hose sprang a leak. Didn't talk to tech so don't know mode of failure, whether it was a connection or the hose itself. Anyway, was not a big deal getting it replaced and re-juiced under warranty.

Mileage - Averaging near 21 in mixed driving. Have only been on one extended trip of ~1600 miles. Averaged right at 20mpg while on interstate at average speed of ~74mph.

Oil Changes:
1st @ ~7000mi using dealership bulk NOS, 15% on OLM;
2nd @ 13,500, dealer, ~20% OLM,
3rd at a indy fast lube using Castrol Dexos something or other @ ~21,xxx miles. (Had to leave town on a family emergency and found myself 800mi from home with OLM at 5%. Decided to have it changed while on the trip for peace of mind).

Performance: I am absolutely enjoying the heck out of this truck. Quiet, comfortable ride. Ample power out of the 6 cylinder. No heavy towing...just frequent use of a 5x10 trailer carrying mowers or an ATV. I use the bed of truck often. Engine has been a pleasure. Good grunt down low. Flawless performance to date. So far...the DI has been a non-issue as far as reliability. Knock on wood.

Complaints: Nothing really. For the long term, I am concerned about cosmetic dings in the sheet metal as it is paper thin as part of the continuing weight reduction efforts. Unless rustproofing has been upgraded for this model, the thin sheetmetal may be a bummer for the rust belt folks.
I do find that I sometimes am not able to start another car on the first try after driving the truck for a while now. In the truck, you need only 'bump' the ignition and the computer will finishing cranking until the engine starts. I find that sometimes when I get into another vehicle, I 'bump' the ignition.....and a 'bump' is all I get. Woops.

Sounds good!

Yeah, that auto start has given me the same grief, got used to that pretty quick.

I've got the GMC version to yours and I don't think I made a mistake at all by getting it over the V8. We just bought a home up in the N. Georgia mountains (elev. approx. 2800 ft.). We have two short sections of steep road to climb to get to our home. Our GMC makes this a non-issue. I've hauled several full truck loads of stuff from our present home, quite a bit of weight, and it cruises right on up the grade. Good choice IMHO.
