My buddy picked this up as a run about. As a retired auto mechanic
he's doing a tune up and inspecting everything. Has 205k miles on it and it was in very nice shape for $2800. One owner was a 93 year old gent.

I am actually currently looking at something similar as well. Most of the small used cars today are overpriced and you pretty much have to buy something near 200k to be reasonable. This car would have been sold for $4k in my area in today's market and I have seen worse.

Parents have 2 Mazda, I can say that from my maintenance with them they do have some corner cutting outside of the powertrain area, mostly in the brake corrosion and things like interior refinement. As a commuter they are legit reliable, especially if you don't live in places that salt the roads.

If I am going to buy a new low budget non hybrid today I would pick Mazda due to the lack of CVT, and proven non turbo design.

As an owner of a 2.5l skyactiv car, I have learned that these early 2.0 and 2.5l skyactiv engines (before they got cylinder deactivation or turbos) are statistically like the second or third most reliable engines of the past 15 years. I thought that was pretty cool for being Mazda's first clean-slate engine design after the divorce from Ford.

Same engine as our 2013 CX-5 (6mt). Looks exactly the same as when I changed the VCG a couple of years ago on ours. Sounds like a tractor starting up but settles in nicely.

Did you buy it new ?
Yes. It was my first ever frivolous vehicle purchase. I was daily driving a 2007 Corolla at the time and also owned a 2004 Chevy Colorado 4x4 for outdoors and farm stuff. When my dad passed away I inherited his 1998 Chevy K1500 so I found myself with two 4x4 trucks, one a deluxe extended cab with a 5.7 V8 and the other an extremely basic standard cab with a manual transmission. The Colorado became trade fodder for the Mazda3.

I only had it about 3.5 years and 35k miles before Bambi mangled it pretty good. After it was fixed I soured on long-term ownership of a car that had so much work done so I traded it for the 2016 Mazda6 I still own. I would have bought another 3 but by then they had just started production in Mexico and the 6 was still being made in Japan.
