I've had this truck since 2014 and have put 26,xxx miles over those years. Changed my oil and put Mobil Delvac 5w-40 CJ-4 right back in again. Started engine and hear clicky-clack, clicky-clack. Never heard this sound before and remember all the threads on the type writer click. I officially have this infamous type sound.

Question, is this still regarded as normal? Any other Powerstroke 6.7 owners have this sound? Drove 110 miles on a trip and it was still making this sound when I parked to check the level.

Was a little disappointed to hear this sound finally...oh well.

Duramax engines are notorious for the Type Writer Tick, GM even published a TSB stating it was a normal phenomenon & no attempt should be made to repair it.

My Duramax's TW Tick is pretty loud when cold & dissipates with heat.

It's normal, especially after an oil change. There is a TSB explaining that it's normal.

This engine is very unique as far as the valve train design. It's a 32V with 32 pushrods and 32 rocket arms and 32 lifters. Each valve has its own assembly. However there are only 2 mechanical rollers that ride on the camshaft. These rollers house 2 very small hydraulic lifters each. If you saw them with an engine apart you'd know why you have these noises. I have had some of these 6.7 powerstrokes with u godly hours on them and I can tell you there is no mechanical harm to the noise you hear.

Thanks mattd... great info. Never heard it until now. I did notice when resetting oil change reminder engine hours and idle times...which is really cool to know.

I am at 26,660 or so and have like 630 total hours with 70 idle. Good to hear it is normal like I suspected...just caught me off guard. Appreciate all the info.

The noise will only really happen at idle. The highest hour 6.7 I pulled apart had 25,000+ hours on it with about 15,000 idle hours. There was nothing wrong with the lifters.
