Bought a new Explorer tonight for my wife (we sold the Azera to her sister who need a decent car in the worst way). The Explorer has the 3.5L V6 Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing (TiVCT) engine in it. The fuel system is sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection (non-DI). The specifications call for 5W-20 and I have some thoughts on the oil, but I thought I would see what others are doing. It will be MC FL-500s filters to start and perhaps others at a later stage.

What say you?

Stay with the Motorcraft filters. I use Pennzoil Ultra in my wife's 2013 on the OLM'S recommendation which is around 10k miles. Engine seems to like the 5W20 oil just fine.
Nice choice, the wife loves hers!

That Ford V6 is no more advanced than the Lambda 3.8 from the Azera. Treat the 3.5 the same way you treated the 3.8 and you will be fine.
Did you drive the new Azera before buying the Exploder? If an SUV was essential, the Santa Fe is very nice.

No; we wanted an SUV (looked at the Expedition--but they are too proud of them much like the sleds from GM). I also wanted to move away from Hyundai; it has been a good car, but the interior of the car has not held up as well as it should have somewhat due to Hyundai's choice of materials and where they are located. Additionally, the Explorer tweaks her techno needs and I have been more than pleased with my FX4.

i love the Santa Fe's they have the best warranties and are nice, fast and well built only problem is they are not cheap anymore like 7 years ago

Congratulations. The Explorer is very nice indeed. Interior feels luxury level to me, I drive a lot of rentals.

Sounds like some great oil recommendations have been made. Enjoy that Explorer!

Many thanks and I agree! I have also had them several times as rentals and I really like it. So does she; a Mercedes ML350 was the other car she was looking at and the Explorer blew it anyway in every aspect. This thing has so many options on it that it practically drives itself. The auto adjust HID headlights freaked her out when they came on the first and I had to laugh.

+1, can't go wrong with Motorcraft oil and filter's for a Ford.

You can see what I use in my signature below. I have the same engine. My 2008 Explorer had the exact same regimen, and took me to 80K with 0 issues prior to turning it in. Even though I took it in for oil changes every 5K, I would always check the oil somewhere between the 3K-4K interval. It never burned oil and the oil always looked very clean on the dipstick.

If it were not a company car and I were doing it myself, I would most likely use the MC synblend oil and filters, or maybe a Bosch Premium or P1.

I spend a little more money on my wife's car because we will keep it for 10+ years, it gets short tripped a lot, and the maintenance on my company car is taken care of with no cost to me.

Coming from a 2008, the only things I really don't like about the 2013 is the fact that it is unibody FWD as opposed to truck body RWD. It drives nicely, but a little more minivan like and a little less truck like. Also, the outward visibility, especially the blind spot is VERY BAD, in comparison to almost everything else I have driven. The 2008 had a lower cowl, more glass, and less thick A,B, and C pillars, so the visibility was very nice. Also, the front air dam is stupid low for an SUV, even a crossover like the Explorer. Overall though, the driving experience is better than my 2008; quieter, faster, better MPG, more (and nicer) interior space, with a more compliant ride.

Yep; it was a 2 for 5 special at AAP (two Azera P1 cartridges returned for 5 MC FL-500s spin-ons). I already like the maintenance costs on this Explorer and I have not had to touch it yet

Although it may be seen as a "crutch" it has onboard radar at all 4 corners to alert you if there is a car in the blind spots. Ford has compensated for most every perceived "weakness" with technology. It is a great car--the adaptive cruise control takes a little tweaking and getting used to, but we really like it so far.

Very nice vehicle and engine choice buddy! I really like the new Explorers. I would personally use PP if taking the OLM to 0, but MC oil will handle the job just fine and save a few bucks in the process.

Agreed. My 2008 was the Limited model, so it had everything on it including back up radar, etc. My new one is the base model (I have Sync as an option, but not MFT), so I had to get used to paying more attention when backing up. Even though the mirrors have built in wide angle convex mirrors, I am still not used to trusting them (or my use of them) just yet while changing lanes. Out of habit, I still turn my head to check my blind spot, there's just really not much to see. Sounds like you have it covered with your more heavily optioned model, but be careful nonetheless. Enjoy.

No DI, sweet! No problem with MC 5W20 and a MC filter then, you'll be keeping her all Ford. Mobil 1 0W20 would be a good choice too. Nice ride good luck with it!
