I was wondering if the cartridge filter for the newer Pentastar engines can be pre-filled? The new filter has an ADBV unlike the older design. My thought was if the filter was put into the cartridge instead of the cap, would you be able to fill the center of the filter with oil and then screw the cap on? Or does the filter have to be installed into the cap, then inserted into the housing and the cap screwed in? It would be the equivalent of pre-filling a traditional screw on type filter if it could be done as I mentioned. Thanks.

No. That's why the housing is empty when you take oil filter cap off. Engine shuts off, oil drains out of housing. You can soak the filter in oil if you want to. I did once, no change in oil PSI light going out.

Let the dealership change the oil/filter. There has been several reports of the Plastic housing breaking after the oil filter housing was redesigned in 2014. Chrysler may have have fixed the issue.

If you insert the new style filter into the housing and seat it, it should close the drainback port and allow you to pre-fill. This seems to somewhat cut down on cap breakage too.

The oil pump on the Pentastar is a monster; it flows so much that your engine will never notice the difference between a filled cartridge and a dry one. I forgot to screw the filter in once...and only once. All 6 quarts were out of that engine in about 10 seconds.

Thanks. I was looking at the re-designed filter from a neighbors 2015 Chrysler mini van the other day and I see no reason why the filter can't be pushed into the housing instead of the cap as you said. The new filter has an anti drain back valve on it so the oil should stay in it if you pre-fill it and them install the cap, at least that's what I thought looking at it. Cutting down on the possibility of breaking the unit is a plus if that's the case.

I was just wondering if someone tried it.
