Toyota '06 3.5L using Cartridge Filter

According to a trade association magazine that I get, Toyota is going to use a replaceable cartridge element in the 3.5L engine used in the new Toyotas coming out this fall. No more spin-on full flow filters.

The photograph in the magazine shows the oil filter housing incorporated into the engine block made of aluminum. It sits vertically, bleow the engine next to the oilpan. The center tube is incorporated into the aluminum screw cap. The screw cap looks like it can be easily removed from under the car with most filter wrenches.

Has anyone else heard about this?
 
Salom44, The 3.5 is already in use in the Avolon. I was at the dealer just yesterday to check it out! I wish now I had poped the hood. Seeing how this is basicly a destroved 4.0 V6 used in the current model Tacoma and 4Runner I wounder if they intend to switch them to the element only style of filter as well?

I do not see were their is any significant difference interms of engine life. You would think that the tiny spin on filters they are commonly useing today give better packageing?
 
Does it make for a messy cartridge change? Handling an oil-soaked "naked" element sounds like a nightmare! Is the cartridge immersed in dirty oil or has the oil drained out through the pan? Definitely sounds like a step backwards from a convenience standpoint!
 
I did an oil change on a 2.2L Ecotec with the cartridge filter. It's quite easy to deal with the filter element--just have some newspaper ready to drop it on. There isn't that much oil on the cartridge filter but it will drip a bit.

Oh, and on that engine, you get to the cartridge filter from the top.

I forgot to mention that the picture in my trade journal shows a screw plug on the bottom of the end cap. So you can drain the filter before taking it out.

This was a common system on motorcycles 20 or 30 years ago. The filter would sit in a cavity on the bottom of the engine with a cover to hold it in place and a drain plug on the cover.

It was messy to change and the only advantage it offered was packaging. The filter didn't protrude from the engine.

The funny thing is, most motorcycles have gone to spin on filters since then...
 
Does anyone know why the shift from convenient spin-on cartridges to this potentiall messy and less convenient system by the auto manufacturers? Seems like s tep backward to me!
 
Done right, as in GM's Ecotec, the cartridge is easier and cleaner than most spin ons. As you unscrew the cap from the top, it pulls the tip out of the ADBV defeat, allowing the oil to drain. Pull cover and element and all out, invert to catch drips, and toss the element in the trash. Clip on the new element, a dab of oil on the O-ring, insert, and tighten about as tight as a spin on. You can also set it aside to drain and then inspect it no cutting needed. Yes, some other manufactures have created a PITA.

There are several advantages. I suspect the green aspect of fewer resources used is what is driving the switch. Having the filter housing as part of the block should result in faster warm ups and less bypass. I am still waiting for the fewer resources used to show up in my wallet. I never priced a PF 47 there, but the PF 2244G cost me $8 at the stealer when nobody else had them. Prices are working down, but my last oil change a Purolator L 15436 was $4 compared to $3 for most of the spin ons.
