My fathers car has just above 50k and has developed a squeal upon startup. I turn off the AC and the squealing is still there and seems to increase as I increase the throttle. I'm wondering if this is the idler pulley or the belt?

If so, any recommendations on belts? I've never had to replace one before but I'm fairly handy at brakes, radiators, etc.

Thanks!

Have someone else start the car and spray a little water on the belt when its making the noise. If it stops you have a bad belt for sure and maybe a weak tensioner which at that age and miles is doubtful. I suspect something got on the belt like coolant or something else.

If the tensioner and idler rotate freely with no noise or gritty feeling and the tensioner feels like it has good force being applied its probably just the belt.
Rock Auto should have a Bando belt for that otherwise Dayco W poly belts are fine. Clean the pulleys with a bit of brake cleaner and a cloth before putting the new belt on just in case there is some contamination.

Yep but this vehicle might have electric power steering.

The Toyota 3.5 is known for munching water pumps. The pulley will cock and cause a squeal sometimes. Pain in the rear job to do too.

Thanks for the headsup about the water pump. I'm going to check it out on a nice day. I hope it isn't the WP with just 50k on the vehicle.
