It's not sustina, it's the standard gold bottle eneos they sell at napa. It was with a NAPA Gold filter. Thought it came out pretty well, low fuel dilution for a DI engine. THis was ~85% highway miles, 65 miles a day.

Thoughts?

The wear metals look good, especially for a relatively green engine. The oil looks like it's sheared quite a bit though. If it were me, I'd limit the OCI to 7,000 or 7,500 miles with this oil, which is plenty far for a DI engine.

Bahahah, that's actually quite funny. Yeah yeah I know.

Again we see a low Visc at 100 C ! All the UOAs on this engine I have seen have 100C Viscosity below 7 Cst for all 0w20 weight oils. Its impossible that Mazda didnt see this when they were testing the vehicle. Seems they are ok with it too. Guess Ill stop obsessing about fuel dilution in this engine now. I wonder how a 0w30 weight oil like M1 AFE affect the wear ?????? Thanks for posting the UOA

DI engines are not candidates for extended oil changes. Both of your viscosity tests are low, flash point is low so even though the fuel dilution is "only" 0.5, I agree with Danh that you've already found and exceeded the comfortable limit. When you're starting with 20 wt, it concerns me to drop even lower especially from fuel which damages the lubricity of the oil. Be happy if you can get 6-7000. That's progress. My 2008 Mazdaspeed3 really can't go beyond 4000 miles and that's starting with 5W-30.

Not bad at all for a new engine.

I do like the look of that oil, but the shearing would scare me senseless - below 6cst???

Does Mazda allow for the use of anything other that 0W-20 here?

Honestly with those wear numbers, I'm perfectly happy with where I'm at, I mean it's not TOO thing ;D

I'm running dealer provided Mazda 0W-20 now which I believe is idemitsu. It will probably be in there for roughly the same amount of time, anywhere from 7500-8000 probably.

I honestly thought that that result, for the 2nd oil fill, was really good as far as wear numbers go. I'm actually quite pleased. I'll be cutting the filter open here later on this week.

Is it dealer bulk or dealer bottled ? If bulk , then its Castrol Edge 0w20 and bottled then its the Idemitsu brand. Should say high moly oil. Here is a thought, we know moly has excellent AW and Friction reducing properties. Do you guys think that Mazda saw the lowering in Viscosity and needed something to offset the additional wear that might happen because of a thinner oil by increasing the AW add pack ? Would explain the gazillion ppm of moly it contains.

Invoice says w/moly, so I would assume that's the idemitsu stuff.

One of the reasons why heavier viscosity oils are used in endurance racing, such as Le Mans etc, is to account for fuel dilution.

It may be that this engine can handle an oil that thins down to a lower 20 grade, or, it's simply suitable but the engine will wear prematurely.

For engines that are fuel dilution prone, I would absolutely stay away from long drain intervals. I'd go 6 months maxed, based on a UOA or follow OEM recommendations.

For oil viscosity, I'd maybe go up a grade at most and use an oil that has little to no viscosity index improvers.

What oils are those ? I think this engine might end up being a perfect candidate for a short drain syn blend 0w20 drain. Sad part is Mazda recommends full syn in CX-5 and 0w20 "grade" in Mazda 3 which leaves it open for interpretation. Here is what the OM says about oil requirements for this engine ( for Mazda 3 )

So basically everyones saying to shorten the OCI or drain interval (which this was like 4 months, so that doesn't make sense) for no specific reason. The manuals OCI is 7,500 miles, so I only pushed it another 650, and that's just because I didn't have time to get to the dealer to do it or do it myself.

I wouldn't complain - it sheared, but there are plenty of engines that are known to shear oil and still live a long life. Wear metals are low, fuel dilution is low, TBN is good. I wouldn't change a thing.

OCI in the manual is 7500 mile or 6 months for Normal / 5000 miles or 4 months for severe.

I would try Mobil 1 0w20 next time, I think you'll find it to be more shear stable.

Although this isn't scientific by any means, myself and other forum members have experienced that engine noise is reduced significantly with Mobil 1 0w20.
