Remove and replace input shaft seal. 2013 Fiesta SE. 5 speed manual. Found out the input shaft seal is installed from inside the box (one of Ford's "Better Ideas") I am installing a used transmission so do not want to tear down the box just to replace a seal. The seals flat side faces the inside of the box so the only thing I have to drive against the the thin edge of the opposite side. Thinking of placing the seal with the flat side towards the engine providing the ID has a surface to contact.

I will experiment on the 13's original transmission. No harm as I will be rebuilding it later.

Honestly, just split the box. I don't see how you can make this work from the outside.

there's minimal tear down required. you generally don't need to remove gears from the shafts (sometimes the 5th or 6th gear needs to come off, but that's easy enough.

No reason that can’t be replaced without splitting the box. Just need a drift the same diameter as the seal outer, and tap it in until flush. No different to if the seal was the other way around.

the outside diameter is much smaller on the ones I've worked on (not ford). You put the seal from the inside untill it bottoms out on the casing.

I don't think splitting the case just to replace the seal is a great idea. Have you done that just to replace the seal on the IB/5 transmission? Even if you don't have to remove gears from their shafts you still have to remove shifting related pieces to get to the seal. Do you have to remove the 5th gear to split the case? then there's the 5th gear area gasket to replace and removal and application of sealant at the split. That's a lot of bother just to replace a seal.

considering you just removed the box from the car, it's not much more bother.

I've done them on hyundais, they had a whole bunch fitted with the wrong seal from the factory and it leaked quickly. with them, there's no question it's impossible to change from the outside. it was less than an hour to replace the seal. remove the reverse light switch, remove the shift assembly, split the box, remove the shift forks, remove the shafts, replace seal, reassemble and use rtv.

Sounds like you do this a lot. I have not had a transmission apart in at least 30 years plus I am doing this at home, not in a fully equipped shop. I am going to install the box w/input seal as is. Will rebuild the box that came with the car at my leisure after I get parts I need to repair 1st gear synchro.
