The Verano basically a luxury Cruze - but 250HP is quite the surprise to me!

2013 Buick Verano Turbo Debuts with 250 Horsepower

DETROIT – Buick today announced the 2013 Verano Turbo luxury sedan will be powered by an Ecotec 2.0L turbocharged engine with direct injection and continuously variable valve timing that produces an SAE-certified 250 horsepower (187 kW) at 5300 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. (353 Nm) of torque at 2000 rpm. Acceleration from 0-60 mph is an estimated 6.2 seconds.

The Verano Turbo goes on sale later this year.

More than 90 percent of the Verano Turbo’s peak torque – more than 234 lb.-ft. – is available between 1700 to 5500 rpm. Its closest competitor, the 2013 Acura ILX 2.4L, offers a peak of 170 lb.-ft. of torque.“The 2.0L turbo engine was designed for refinement, higher output capabilities and reduced noise,” said Amy Joss, Ecotec 2.0L assistant chief engineer. “The way it sounds, the power delivery and the refined character are all fitting of a luxury sedan with a fun side.”

In December, Buick’s 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec engine was named one of WardsAuto World’s 2012 10Best Engines for North America. At the time, the publication’s editor-in-chief, Drew Winter, said: “This engine delivers a level of power and sophistication that redefines Buick.”

The choice to use a small-displacement turbocharged engine for a more powerful Verano model is consistent with Buick’s effort to downsize its powertrains without sacrificing performance. Verano and the Regal luxury sport sedan are available exclusively with four-cylinder engines, while the LaCrosse luxury sedan comes standard with a four-cylinder engine paired with eAssist technology, which uses an electric motor and battery to boost both performance and fuel economy. The standard 2013 Regal four-cylinder engine also is equipped with eAssist.

“Buick’s engine strategy continues to be driven by intelligent performance,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick Marketing. “Four-cylinder engines, turbocharging and eAssist are all the right solutions for today’s market. With these advanced technologies, Buicks are more efficient without sacrificing their smooth, quiet character.”

According to IHS Automotive, use of four-cylinder engines in North American vehicles will grow 74 percent from 6.9 million to 12.2 million units over the next 10 years.

The Verano Turbo will be available with a choice of a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. Including Regal Turbo and Regal GS, the Buick brand offers more manual transmissions than Ferrari and Lamborghini combined.
Acceleration performance is expected to be consistent between the two transmissions.

Fuel economy numbers are not final, but the Verano Turbo is expected to be in line with Buick’s other turbocharged models. Pricing will be announced closer to the start of production in late 2012.

Buick is a modern luxury brand offering vehicles with sculpted designs, luxurious interiors with thoughtful personal technologies, along with responsive-yet-efficient performance. Buick is attracting new customers with its portfolio of award-winning luxury models, including the Enclave crossover, LaCrosse sedan, Regal sport sedan, Buick Verano sedan and the all-new 2013 Encore crossover. Hmm....maybe I really *would* rather have a Buick.

Now they just need to make something like the CTS-V....

Their designs in recent years are appealing to more than people over 50, I like where Buick is going.

The v8 died off as a prominent engine in motor vehicles around the 80's, and now we are seeing the death of the v6.

With the CAFE standards coming,V8s and V6s will be near extinct.A V6 getting 40-50 mpg is pretty far fetched.

GM used pretty much the same engine in the Cobalt SS turbo, the Saturn Sky, and Pontiac Solstice GTP. It was rated at 260 hp from the factory, and there was a dealer-installed calibration that bumped it up to 300 hp without voiding the factory warranty.

I wonder what the actual 0-60 will end up being. Interestingly a 328i with a 2-liter turbo makes 10 less HP and same torque, is about 150 lbs heavier, yet can do 0-60 in half a second less than the Verano.

Good effort from GM though and I applaud them for making it available with a manual trans.

Oh and I remember hat an oddity turbo 4's were when they were just about only found in saabs a few years back...

This is good news. The Cruze turbo is far too slow for my taste.

I think of the Cruze/Verano or the Focus as likely replacements for our Civic if anything should happen to it.

I agree with you! I'd rather it be rear wheel or AWD.

You are correct! I forgot that.

The flip side of slow is good fuel economy. I've averaged 43.5 mpg over 22k miles with my Cruze driven fairly conservatively, but not all the time.

Still, it's nice to see Buick with some drool-worthy cars again! And, bets on when the first crashed Verano Turbo MT gives up its turbo engine for a Cruze Eco MT drivetrain swap. That engine minus 400 lbs just might motivate an Eco MT to 60 in under 6 seconds...

But we all know the foibles of big hp in a FWD vehicle. Challenging to say the least.

I sure hope the general has some chassis tweaks up his sleeve.

Exactly how many years ago?

I can think of numerous Volvos, VWs, Chrysler products, Mitsubishis, and Subaru models with turbocharged 4 cylinder engines.

I was about to say that. I had a bunch of early to mid 80's turbo Mopar products. All lasted a long time.

There's zero torque steer in my Cruze, even running a tune and doing without some of the torque steer reducing devices seen on non-Eco Cruzes. GM did an excellent job tweaking the torque steer out of this chassis.

I bet the Verano Turbo limits the boost at low gears and low speeds to stop torque steer. Probably once it hits 3rd is only when the full boost of the engine comes on. I see the same thing in my Cruze, even on the tune. 1st gets me maybe 5 PSI at WOT, 2nd gets me 18-19 PSI, and 3rd nets the full 22 PSI the turbo is capable of shoving out.

Yeah it may on paper be able to compete with a little BMW, but in the real world I highly doubt it.

Yes, I am aware of torque management as a strategy for helping, but there's a HUGE difference in hp here. I've had a few high powered fwd cars and they can get a bit squirrelly!
