2013 Accord CVT

If it’s anything like our 2015 CRV was, it has a very usable Sport program, and a very pleasant normal program.

Our CRV (bought used, so we don’t know the history, but we had some chronic problems with it, so it may have been a bad copy) had a quirk with the CVT. It made a lot of rattling noise when creeping along slowly, such as driving looking at Christmas decorations. Sounded exactly like a failing AC compressor. It only happened at 1200-1600 rpms in that high ratio crawl gearing. As soon as it started to ratio-down, the rattle went away. So, if I were to advise a test, it would be that. Crawl around a neighborhood street at “barely going” speeds and listen for growling/crunching.

The driving experience was great for a CVT and mpg was no joke. It also eeked a lot of power out of the 4 cylinder.

Sounds like Honda makes a good CVT.
Yes they do!
My daughter is on her 2nd Honda with a CVT and both are/were extremely nice to drive and worked as designed without failure.
However, CVT's have a higher failure rate. Even some Toyota's have had some failures but I believe that Nissan, all-in-all, is/was leading the pack with the most CVT failures. This could be because Nissan used the most CVT's in more vehicles than other manufactures. So therefore, is it likely that they would have more failures? IDK!

My question about CVT's is, are they the most problematic transmission out there?
I mean, for many years, many decades in fact, Chrysler conventional/step-shift automatic tranny's were leading the industry for the most failures. And the domestic BIG 3 certainly had their share of automatic transmission failures that I can recall in my lifetime. But too, the BIG 3 also had some auto tranny's that were known to be indestructible.

Just remember to change the CVT fluid every 25k miles.

Change the filter, too!

I’ve heard the same recently too, though it’s not a source I have any trust with. - It was told to me by a Toyota dealer, who said it is manufactured by Mitsubishi/jatco. It surprised me a little, as Honda CVTs are well-regarded - but then again, jatco will be building it to a spec required by Honda. <idk?>

I’ll say this, we test drove a civic with it and the power transfer felt notably more direct than a traditional automatic.

Any pic's?
