My 2013 5.0 Mustang drinks about a quart of Motorcraft 5w20 every 3,000 miles. From what I am told on the Mustang forums this is not uncommon for the 5.0 V8. Some have suggested that switching to a different oil will reduce the oil usage? Acording to some on the Mustang forums the Motorcraft part synthetic 5w20 seems to burn off too easy? So I figured I would ask here what do you all think?

Are you thinking a different brand or weight change? My 5.0 is not an oil user. If it was, I would try different oils to help reduce consumption. Personally I don't use MCraft oils. Their filters, yes. Mine has been happy with 5w20 QS, supertech, PU, PP. I run an oil catch can on the passenger side it seems to do a good job of keeping what little oil mist/blow-by, that I do have, out of the intake. I would think a motor that is a real user of oil would benefit greatly from this modification. I don't see how it could hurt. Ford will say using that much oil is normal, probably.

Ford certified MTC945-A, lots of current 5w20 oils meet this Ford spec. Trackpac and Boss302 motors call for 5w50, virtually the same engine as the GT. Much debate on using other than 20wt in the GT coyote 5.0. Adding 3 make up quarts between changes sure don't sound good to me. "Normal", right.......

A 5w30 at the thinnest and better yet a 0w40 IMO and see what happens to the high consumption from there.

I'd try different brands in the same grade. If that doesn't work
I'd look into trying 0W or 5W30.

PU and Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 in my 5.0. No recognizable oil consumption on 9000+ mile OCIs.

Have you checked with your dealer about gross oil consumption under warranty? How many miles on your 5.0? All this oil is going some where. Into your intake thru the PCV system and thru the combustion chamber and thru the cat converters, NOT good for emission component longevity at all. A catch can would at least contain a majority of the oil from the intake and beyond. Most Ccans have only a few ounce capacity, so one may need draining on a frequent basis.

I am going to order a oil separator / catch can by weeks end and when the Mustang comes out of storage I will know more and see how much the can catches. The car has about 15,000 miles on it I bought it this past summer with about 10,000 miles on it so I dont know how it was driven the first 10k although many on the Mustang forums state that with the new 5.0 if it's driven to soft they use oil? The people that beat on them at brake in seem to have little or no oil consumption. Also many feel it's a good idea to switch to a 5w30? Although they don't have any good evidence as to why it's a good idea to switch to the 5w30 over the 5w20 oil.

The dealer and Ford say oil consumption of 1 quart per 1,500 miles is considered normal or acceptable.... If you can believe that!

The 5.0 in my 2014 Mustang GT hardly uses any oil and I use 5W-20 Motorcraft blend. I also run an oil catch can on the passenger side of the engine.

I did a few hard runs when I was breaking it in and it seems to have worked. I have about 10,700 miles on the car.

Seems on many of the Mustang forums that people that ran there new 5.0 in hard seem to have much less oil consumption then people that ran it in easy.
